ALL EDITIONS At ArtMM tatu, M. IM Wood litter designed to close pores term "wood filler" is often misinterpreted. Many persons associated it with such items as plastic wood, water putty and similar materials intended to plug cracks, holes or other gaps in finished or unfinished pieces of wood. When, however, you are told to use a wood filler as the first step in finishing wood, the words recover their true meaning a product designed to close the pores of certain kinds of wood. NATURALLY, THESE This ramada-cabana enclos- tire Is designed for travel trailer owners.

The I cabana room in this particular model is 10 17 feet with a pre-fab paneled interior. The roof of I the ramada is of all-weather aluminum. The en. closures can be built larger if the buyer desires, and out of slump block, wood or aluminum. 'Trailer country club jlias opening today STORY AND PHOTOS BY AL DAVIS homesites increased nationally during 1968, from 819,852 to 871,162.

Arizona has 475 parks and 40,304 home- sites, and is the third highest state in mobile home ownership. Maricopa Realty and Trust Co. now has a new interpretation of the old concept of mobile home parks. Today, the company will hold its opening of Desert Sands Golf and Country Club located one-half ridle east of Power Road (Bush Highway) on Baseline Road, seven miles east of Mesa. t- DIFFERENT concept is a mobile home subdivision with each lot bordering on a green of an 18-hole golf course.

Says Miss Neysa Donato, president of the trust company, "A person can own his own land here for the same or less than paying rent in a mobile home park." Today's opening is of the first unit of possibly 10 units of lots. Plans call for more than 2,000 lots. Backdropped by the Superstition Mountains, the "subdivision" will eventually, over a five-year period, engulf 560 acres, with the first unit stretching over 150 acres or about 15 per cent of total acreage. UNIT NO. 1, consisting of 191 lots, surrounds the first nine holes of the golf course.

The unit is nearly complete and 17 residents were expected to be in by today. First residents to move in were Mr. and Mrs. Wes Oyler, formerly of Seaside, Calif. Oyler, a retired Army warrant officer with more than 27 years' service, decided to move to the Valley after a short visit here last March.

Development of Desert Sands began in March of last year. The idea was conceived by vice president in charge of construction, Nick Donato, who was a developer of Apache Country Club Estates and Apache Wells Mobile City, in the same general area. THE LOTS ARE 60x120 feet or larger. Prices range from $2,195 to 3,295. For the 60-by 120-foot lot, payments would be approximately $35 per month spread over a six-year period.

All utility facilities, such as gas, water and power lines, will be underground and will be included in the base price. Highest payment for the largest lot would stretch to $65 per month also over a six-year span. Miss Donato says that there will be a few restrictions stipulated to prospective buyers. Two are: trailers smaller than 10x50 feet would be required to be enclosed and have a ramada and screening around the trailer; lots would be sold preferably to adults. Other restrictions outline architectural improvements, lot maintenance and overall sight-appeal aspects.

In addition to the regular lots, there will be spaces set aside for travel-trailer owners. Enclosures made of slump block, wood and all- weather aluminum are being erected by the developers and will sell for $2,000 and up. Each will have a 10-by-17 foot room to the side. "A PROPERTY owners' association will be formed once there are 170 lots sold," states Miss Donato, "They will set rules governing the country club and will make decisions as to additional facilities will be built." The golf course was designed by Jack Snyder who also laid out Apache Wells and Mountain Shadows courses. It will provide 3,240 yards of action.

A club house with cafe has already been completed at the project. The second unit is already under construction and will line the second nine holes of the course to the northeast. Maintenance of the course will be taken care of by the developer. Desert Sands residents will be charged 50 cents apiece for a round of golf. Desert Sands will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m.

to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. woods are thosi which have large open pores, such as oak, mahogany, walnut, chestnut, elm, butternut, hic- ory, ashk rosewood and satinwood. They require a wood filler because most persons prefer them to smooth surfaces, although some see them as more beautiful when the pores are left as they are.

Most wood fillers come in gemipaste form. It Is important to read the label on the container to determine the type of thinner to be used. The filler is brushed on the wood 1 first with the grain, then against the grain. It quickly takes on a dull appearance, which is the signal to begin rubbing the covered area, a process known professionally as "flattening." The rubbing should be done with a piece of clean burlap in a modified circular motion. The movement with the grain spreads the filler well into the pores of the wood.

WHEN THE rubbing is completed, the excess should be wiped off very lightly with a clean, lintlesS cloth in the direction of the grain. If this wipe-off is neglected, the surface of the wood will become tacky. On the other hand, if it is done with too much pressure, some of the filler may be lifted from the pores. Although there are various views on how long the filler should be permitted to set before going ahead with the finishing operation, we have found that it is best to wait two or three days. The surface should then be sanded very lightly, wiping off all sanding dust.

A coat of sealer is then applied. It can be a light coat of shellac or almost any other sealer, with one exception: if the final coat is to be lacquer, use only a sealer formulated for use under lacquer. A beginner in the of wood filler will often make the mistake of covering too large an area at one time. 1 The filler may then begin to- harden on one part of the work before the rubbing is started, preventing er from obtaining the desired smooth surface. There is no reason for panic should this occur.

The filler can be quickly resoftened by wiping it with a cloth soaked in the recommended thinner. ONE OTHER point the novice should know before tackling the job of wood filling: If, after applying the filler and completing the rubbing, he discovers, on close examination, that some of the pores do not appear to be filled, he should repeat the entire operation before putting on the sealer. FIRST and Mrs. Wes Oyler, first residents of Desert Sands, prepare their back yard patio which is adjacent to the ninth-hole of the golf course. At the far right is the water tower which will supply residents of the country club.

Improving reception Color TV or FM-Stereo can be made even more exciting if a few simple steps are taken to assure best reception. Make sure the transmission line from antenna to receiver is more than nine inches away from metal, has no sharp bends and is as short as possible. Flat transmission lines should be twisted to eliminate stray signals; use low-loss po- lyfoam lines for UHF; and avoid metal-ring insulators. Use a high-gain antenna to improve color and black and white reception from distant stations. For problem areas and where stations are located in different directions, installing a good antenna rotating device will help.

This will point your antenna for most efficient pick-up of station signals.
