A horrible calamity occurred at the oil well of Little Mtrick, on the Buchanan Flats, near Franklin, on Wednesday.

A vein of oil was tapped, and a spout thrown up two hundred feet in height. A crowd collected to see it, when the oil took fire, and an explosion took place, killing four persons instantly whose bodies were consumed in the flames. Jilr. IIowsek, of the firm of Rowser. Mitchell IJrown, was burnt so that he died at 3 o'clock A.

Thursday. Thirteen were deid at 4 o'clock P. on Thursday, and ten were not expected to live twenty-four hours. Thirty-four persons in all are kuvra to have been "burnt, and as there were many strangers present, it jvaa supposed many more have perished. A 6on of H.

Gardner, of Michigan, was Jtmrnt to death, and a porticn ef his body was recovcied. The legs and arms, and a portion of the head, were all consumed. His remains were "brought down on the Le Clare, in charge of Mr. JM. II.

Kelset, who is conveying them to the lad's parents in Michigan. Mr. Rowser, immediately 'after the calamity occurred, despatched a man for an officer and made his will, in which it is stipulated that $50,000 be given to the poor of lis county, $200 to each of the two men who rescued him from the fire, those and other features in the will showing him a man of benevolence. There were four wells consumed in the vicinity, and also a barn belonging to Mr. Btj- -CHANAN.

GOBLE GARDENER lost SeventY-five barrels of oiL The owners of the oil at this well lost two hundred and fifty barrels. Buchanan loss was one hundred and six barrels. The Rice well lo6t one hundred and twenty-five barrels. The Wadsworth well lost two hundred barrels. Tor the above details we are indebted to Mr.

Wil-Xi am Smithfield street. He was on the ground when the affair occurred, and gaveis a graphic account of the whole Pittiiburg Chronicle. Professor Lowe, who proposes, at some future day, to cross to Europe by means of a balloon, made a successful ascension at early dawn, last Saturday, from Cincinnati. It was the first attempt in America to ascend at night. He had prepared himself a balloon out ot the best oiled sUk, having a diameter of forty-two feet.

It measured forty-four yards in circumferenco, and fifty-five feet from the top to the valve, and possessed a capacity of 30,000 cubic feet. He began the inflation of the balloon on the lot adjoining the Commercial Hospital on tbe west, at about 11 o'clock Friday night. At 2 o'clock everything was ready. Half an hour later the ropes were cut, and the daring aronaut, in the presence of only about fifty persons so quiet had the matter been kept started on his voyage. The balloon shot up into the air, and then started due northwest; ascending higher, it changed its course northwardly, and then, as it disappeared from view, bore directly eastward.

The sky was clear, and the moon shone with great brilliancy, while there was but a light breeze at the being to the advantage of the aeronaut, tkldom has there been seen a more beautiful sight than that of the large balloon sailing majestically away towards the star-lit canopy above, its form made distinctly visible by tho soft rays of Luna, until it disappeared in the distance as a cloud melts away into space before the rays of a summer's sun. Terrible Railroad Accident. A terrible railroad accident occurred on the Cleveland and Pittsburg Railroad, Friday night last, at Deep Bun, about five miles above this city. Tie train from Pittsburg was coming down at the rate of thirty-rive miles an hour, when the Deep Run bridge gave way. The locomotive passed entirely over the bridge, leaving only two wheels of the tender, and so great was the speed of the train that all the cars pasted over the gulf and ran a considerable distance beyond.

Oae unfortunate passenger, a Mr. Sanford, of the firm of San-tobd Riggs, Wellsville, was killed. A rail irom the track was forced up through the car, and passed through the body of Mr. pinning him in a horrible position to the roof. Those of the passengers and train men who were uninjured, cut the unfortunate man loose, but he died in less than half an hour.

Mr. Spavldixg, ot this city, and Mr. Davenport, of the Ohio River Salt Campa-y, and as many as half a dozen others, were slightly, but not seriously hurt. The cars were all badly broken up and damaged. Ic is thought that nothing but the speed at which the train was Tnovir saved the passengers from destruction.

Intelligencer. Rumor about the Custom House Information entitled to credit was lodged at the Post ejrlrce-, last night, to the effect that an 'order had Tcen issued by Gov. Letciikr to one or more of the State military companies here to take and occupy the Custom House. The information was promptly acted upon and put in possession of the Mayor and other trustworthy parties, and Respite all precautions to make secret movements, was soon spread like wildSre through the city. In less than an hour hundreds of people congregated about the Custom House to tender taeir ati vices for its defence, and the utmost excitement prevailed.

When it became known, however, that the city authorities wculi take the matter in hands and use all necessary precautions for the defence of the property the sensation cooled down and the people quietly dispersed. It was reasonably apprehended from toe movements which the Governor has been latilv mik- 1 ins in other Darts of the State that he ha at tempted the same programme here.
