AN ABLE NEWSPAPER GIRL Quick-witted and delightful, she's a persuasive newspaper girl, so amusing and able one can understand Cary Grant's reluctance to lose her either as wife or reporter, so decorative and charming the Messrs.

Hecht and Mac Arthur must be kicking themselves this minute for not having made Hlldy a woman in the first place. Save for the shift in sex and for certain modernizations in script which, incidentally. Scenarist Charles Lederer has managed deftly "His Girl Friday" faithfully follows the antic inventions of the original comedy. Once more, Hlldy is lured back to write "Just one more" story. LOCKED IN A DESK Once more the pathetic escaped murderer la shut up in a desk in the Criminal Courts Building press room.

Once more Hlldy and her would-be mate are given the run-around and the daffy double-cross by Burns until the bewildered fiance goes back to Albany, Hildy to her Job on the paper. Howard Hawks, who can fly a plane or direct a picture with equal ease, has sent "His Girl Friday" tipping along at a staccato pace that leaves cast and audience agreeably breathless. HILARIOUS CO-STARS Miss Russell and Mr. Grant have never been better as the hilarious co-stars; while only the sourest movie hater would find fault with Ralph Bellamy's dumb, umbrella-carrying Insurance salesman. John Qualen's murderer, Billy Gilbert's Joe Petti-bone, or Helen Mack's hysterical Mollie.

POOPS OPEN foe i ona Studio Plans 'Neon Colbert Urged to Play in 'Witch of Wilderness' With Spencer Tracy By Louella O. Parsons HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 24. WHILE I wasnt a mouse under the chair when Carole Lombard and Joe Pasternak had lunch Jon at Universal, I happen to know what they were discussing. Joe was interested In getting Carole to co-star with Charles Boyer In "Neon Lights," with Henry Koster directing.

You cant pin Pasternak down for a minute to say this Is the truth but I dont need to have him ell me, for I got my information elsewhere. If Miss Lombard has Koster direct her and Pasternak produce the movie she's a lucky girl. This team makes no flops and they bring out all the best qualities in every star with whom they work. Boyer, who is tops among the gents, will be lucky too, for good pictures are what all our stars need and Joe makes them. Claudette Colbert to Do Film for M.

G. M. Claudette Colbert has had to take a lot of kidding on being the highest paid gal hi the U. S. A.

To equs 1 her 1938 record she will have to work hard in 1940. Well, she has cn extensive program laid out cr her by all the companies. If she accepts, that's another matter. She has promised Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer one picture and if King 1Zot has his way it will be "Witch of the Wilderness." That's the novel of Desmond Holdridge adapted by Lawrence StaHiEgs In which a yachting party Is and faces death on a South American island. Their primitive instincts came to the fore quite as in "The Admirable Crlchton." The hero Is the captain of the boat and Spencer Tracy has already been elected for that role.

Jeffrey Lynn Gets Roll of Minister The moment I got home and had a chance to talk with Hal Wallis I asked who would play Henry Field, the New England minister In "All This And Heaven Too." At that time every one was undecided, but today he told me that Jeffrey Lynn is set to play this role opposite Bette Davis and Charles Boyer. Bette is responsible for the selecticn of Jeffrey. She wanted him in "Dark Victory," but at that time he wasn't available and it was her sucsestion that put him into the role. It will be interesting to see whether young Lynn fulfills the conception. In the book Henry Field was younger than the governess he married, played by Bette.

Nelson Eddy to Start Concert Tour Thank heavens! Now the Nelson Eddy fans throughout the country can see for themselves that he is not blind. Nelson leaves on a three-month concert tour, which opens in Sacramento Feb. 10. I've received at least 50 letters asking about Nelson's blindness, saying that he was being led around the stuclo and that he was using the Braille system. I even began to believe it myself until I came home and found rot only that were his eyes good, but that he can see much better than you and I and most of the world.

Amazing how these rumors start. The M-G-M studio has had similar letters. Apparently an Item was printed somewhere, but I'm happy to tell my readers it's untrue and decidedly unfair. "Hla Oirl Friday" is, if anything, brighter and breezier than "The Front Page" of which it is a brilliant remake. Obviously, Columbia knew what it was about when it decided to dust off Hecht and Mac Arthur's mile-a-min- ute yarn about wild-eyed newspaper folk and a reporter desperately determined to quit his Job for marriage and the peace and quiet of an ad vertising onice. IIILDY NOW IS SKIRTS Instead of contenting itself with turning out a straight duplicate of probably the most famous and most frequently imitated newspaper com edy of our day, the studio has prank-ishly put Hlldy Johnson into skirts, made her the ex-wife of that demon managing editor, Walter Burns, and given her a slow-witted insurance man for fiance.

STORY OF EXPEDITION This first production of the recently-formed Famous Productions, with Harry Edington, former talent agent, as producer, and James Whale as director, follows a more or less stereotyped formula in its chronicling of the expedition's beginning, its discoveries and further seeking, the desertion of the half-savage natives and the attack on the American garrison by hostile tribes. One Item not so stereotyped Is the presence of Joan Bennett, who arrives in the middle of the film seeking her husband. Vincent Price. Price having been killed off conveniently, it becomes apparent by an Indian arrow. Miss Bennett's charms thereupon become the expedition's centre of attraction, and cause one or two black eyes.

She also displays latest Jungle styles for the well-dressed woman. SHOTS OF MONKEYS Miss Bennett's presence is not necessary in the development of the fundamental plot, but it does help in expanding the picture to regulation feature length, and adds visual pleasure.
