-2 Section 1 Chicago Tribune, Monday, January 1, 1996 Hevrdejs TXTp CONKLIN UNlj. Vi.i In '96, be thankful that hair today is gone tomorrow UV ahead and grumble "Thank God it's over." You've got a right, especially after all the silliness we witnessed in the human comedy played out in 1995. Natch, INC. NEWSMAKERS U2's Bono scores a 1st with visit to Sarajevo SARAJEVO, Bosnia-HerzegovinaA visit to this long-besieged city left the U2 rocker Bono red-eyed Sunday from staying up late to celebrate peace with the Bosnian Muslims whose cause he championed. Bono apologized for wearing black wrap-around sunglasses, saying, "I'm not a poseur." The Irish singer stayed late into the night in a popular downtown restaurant with Foreign Minister Muhamed Sacirbey and other prominent Saraje-vans.

"I'm very happy to be the first tourist in the new Sarajevo," Bono said soon after his arrival Saturday on a United Nations plane. Russian Tea Room will get a face lift NEW YORK New York's famed Russian Tea Room, a landmark in the city since 1927, closed its doors Sunday for renovations and is set to reopen in early 1997. Current owner Faith Stewart-Gordon, who inherited the restaurant from her late husband, Sidney Kaye, in 1967, sold the Tea Room earlier this year to Warner LeRoy, flamboyant owner of Central Park's Tavern on the Green. LeRoy plans to spend $12 million to demolish the Tea Room and rebuild it into a nine-story building. Source: Tribune wires menu, plus a Democratic Convention and Atlanta Olympics.

Can't wait, Part More stories on Baby Boomers whining about turning 50 and more stories from Gen Xers whining about the whining boomer stories More O.J. books More from the Mouths of America, Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh. Passages: Monday birthdays: Frank Langella, 56; Don Novello, 53; J.D. Salinger, 77. And to you: The Millennium Society, busy getting things in order for its New Year's Eve 1999 party at the Pyramids, already has received several toasts for the event With thanks to Millennium Society founder Ed McNally, a lawyer here with Altheimer Gray, INC.

wants to pass along a couple favorites with our wishes for a happy and healthy 1996: From Gen. Colin Powell "With all the technology that awaits us in the new century, let's not forget the concept of family. Because at the end of the day, what people remember us for is what we did for our children." Oseola McCarty, laundress from Hattiesburg, "Remember that every one of us, no matter how humble, can leave the world a better place." From George Burns, on receiving an invite to the Dec. 31, 1999, Pyramid party: "Can I bring a date?" EAVESDROPPING "I thought the kids would be different The scary thing is, they weren't." Sasha Whyte, 15-year-old New Yorker, writing in Newsweek, following a UNICEF trip to Bosnia. Talk-show host Oprah Winfrey (left, with Steadman Graham) did a few takes on-her hairdo in 1995.

Attorney Marcia Clark set hers straight, and Bulls player Dennis Rodman brought coiffure color to a different sort of court. took a pass on appearing with the band at Universal Studios, too, where more cartoon characters also romp with tourists. Here's hoping Willie at least has a good time marching in Monday's parade if they let him participate. Hollywood hype: So you liked Greg Kinnear in So did the world's movie exhibitors, who have named Kinnear the "star of tomorrow," with honors to be bestowed in March at their NATOShoWest '96 convention in Las Vegas. Can't wait, Part 1: You didn't think we'd give you a whole column of moaning and groaning.

No way. There's lots to look forward to in 1996, such as Christopher Reeve giving new meaning to the word spunk as well as more Chris O'Donnell movies and a "Brady Bunch" sequel. The megamusical "Show Boat" cruises into Chicago, the new Museum of Contemporary" Art opens its doors as will a new House of Blues. There are new eateries by Rich Melman and Wolfgang Puck on the year's "Judge Dredd' and "Assassins" while Sean Connery did disaster honors with "First Knight." And who could forget "Mallrats," "Fair Game" and "Tank Girl?" Those names ad nauseam: we re hoping to avoid Anna Nicole Smith (even though she now has an official web site on the Internet), O.J. Simpson, Donald Trump, and Kato Kaelin.

The marital woes of Christie Brinkley and Rick Taubman, Liz Taylor and whoever, Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere, Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett. Enough already. Poor Willie: No matter how Northwestern's football team fares in Monday's Rose Bowl, team mascot Willie the Wildcat has been taking a beating from his Hollywood counterparts. Disneyland wouldn't let Willie appear with the Wildcat marching band during its visit to the amusement park because it didn't want any other cartoon characters crashing those photo ops with Mickey, Minnie and pals. INC.

noticed an apparently gun-shy Willie was there, chronicling the highs, lows and bargain-basement shenanigans. How could we not write about such hair-raising issues as Oprah Winfrey's new then newer 'do, Marcia Clark's locks (and skirt lengths), Hillary Rodham Clinton's bob (or was that a pageboy?) and Dennis Rodman's totally amazing Technicolor tresses? And then there were: Those Scoundrels: Yes, Hugh Grant starred in his own Divine (Brown) comedy in' Hollywood. (Hey, that incident is so milch a part of Hollywood history, INC. fdund tours of the neighborhood inevitably include a Grant mention, along with such sites as Mann's Chinese Theater.) And there were Calvin Klein's odd ads Bob Packwood's weird diaries and Mel Reynolds with his oh, forget it. Those celluloid stinkers: Joe Eszterhas gifted us with a duo of duds "Showgirls" and "Jade," while Demi Moore did some damage with "Scarlet Letter."
