2 Section 2 Chicago Tribune, Monday, November 14, 1994 WC Plane crash lolls pilot, 3 others near U. of I. 1 i 1F MkHIt JL it JN. li ILJi 1U Willard Airport The airplane appeared to have taken off normally, but a witness said it was Dying too low as it crossed over U.S. Highway 45, about a quarter-mile south of the airport, and hit the tree, Reese said.

The cause of the crash was still under investigation Sunday by the National Transportation Safety Board, according to a spokeswoman with the Federal Aviation Administratioa But the poor visibility and bad weather could have played a role, said Bill Giannetti, president of Flightstar which runs Wil-lard's general aviation terminal "The conditions of the night were about as bad as they could be for a non-commercial airline, and you've got to think that had some impact" Giannetti said. Lannon, who lived on Chandelle Court in the Aero Estates subdivision in Naperville, played on the U. of football team and graduated in 1961. with a degree in accountancy, according to the Illio yearbook. Lannon served on the advisory board of the College of Commerce and Business Administration and was a retired top financial executive with Nicor, the holding company of Northern Illinois Gas, said Tom Minar, associate dean for external affairs for the business school.

As a member of the Naper Aero Club, Lannon belonged to a group of about 250 airplane enthusiasts who loved to fly small planes, such as Cessnas and Pipers. Like Lannon, many members of the club also lived, in the Aero Estates subdivision, which surrounds a small airport that the club uses. "It's very hard," said Gene Popma, a vice president of the flying club. "We have a very close-knit group of airplane enthusiasts here, and we've never had any incidents or crashes like this." By Tom Pelton Tribune Staff Writer Members of a Naperville pilots club and officials at the University of Illinois were thrown into an emotional tailspin Sunday after a fiery plane crash near Champaign killed a business executive and amateur pilot and his three passengers. John J.

Lannon, a retired gas utility executive from Naperville who advised the university's business school, was one of four people killed Saturday when London's plane crashed into a bean field just south of Champaign, officials said. The single-engine Cessna 210 left Willard Airport at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign at about 7 p.m. in foggy, drizzly Weather and clipped the top of a tree just before it slammed into the ground and exploded, according to an airport official Lannon and his three passengers were flying home to Naperville after watching a football game between the U. of I. and Penn State, according to university officials.

Louis Liay, executive director of the university alumni association, said Lannon was greatly respected at the university and will be sorely missed. "I know he was a big Dlini fan and he came down for most games," Liay said. "This is just tragic." The names of the other crash victims could not be confirmed Sunday. Investigators with the Champaign County Coroner's Office were checking the victims' dental records because the bodies were badly burned, said Coroner Eldon Quick. The airplane's fuel tanks ignited after the aircraft rolled upside-down in the field and lost a wing.

Wreckage was scattered 1,000 yards from the crash, said Tom Reese, a crash rescue specialist at (at We're celebrating our one year birthday at and November 18 and complete your travel by February 28,1995.
