If, The Dally Importer, Saturday, Oefctor 19, Charles Collingwood To Host Two TV Shows CBS News Correspondent Charles Collingwood, veteran Peabody Award-winning ewsman, takes on two new interesting assignments this season as host of "Person to Person," which returns Friday and host-narrator of "Conquest," to start Nov. 1. His new Assignments follow a two-year tenure abroad as chief of the CBS News London Bureau Interestingly enough, it was another London bureau chief, Edward R. Murrow, who hired Collingwood as a CBS News Correspondent in the British capital in 1941; and their paths, which have crossed many times since then, do so once again, with Collingwood taking over as host of "Person to Person." Collingwood, 42, who began his journalistic career with the United Press in London in 1940 and who has been a CBS News Correspondent for the past 18 years, has received, many awards and citations for his outstanding broadcast reporting since 1941. He won a Peabody Award' for "the best news broadcast of 1942," during the Allied invasion of North Africa.

In 1943, he was cited by the National Headliner's Club for "consistently accurate and interesting accounts of the fighting in North Africa war zone." Six years later, in 1949, Collingwood won his second National Headliner's Club radio award for his coverage of the Arizona-Colorado dispute over the division of water from the Colorado In 1954, he was the winner of the Institute of World Affairs medal for "distinguished service to the cause of world understanding." In 1955, he was narrator of the CBS Television Network's "Adventure" series whicf- captured a Peabody Award for its "lucid and intelligent blending of science and showmanship." A year later, Collingwood received the General Federation of Women's Club Television Award in the field of education for his part in the "Adventure" series, and the English Speaking Union bestowed its 'Better Understanding Award upon him 1957, "in recognition of Mr. Collingwood's fair and honest reporting on matters affecting British- American relations in 1956." Charles Collingwood, the son of Mrs. G. H. Collingwood and the late Mr.

Collingwood, was born June 4, 1917, in Three Rivers. one of six children. His father, at the time, was Professor of Forestry at Cornell University. When young Charles was i years old, his family moved to Washington, D.C., where his father assumed a high post in the U. S.

Forestry Service. Following his graduation from Central High School in the nation's capital, Collingwood attended Deep Springs School in California and then went to Cornell, where he majored in law and philosophy and was graduated cum laude in 1939. During the Summers, he worked as a cbwpunch- er in California, a timber cruiser in North Carolina and West Virginia and as deckhand on a freighter. Upon graduating from Cornell, Collingwood won a Rhodes Scholarship which took nim to Oxford. He also won a second scholarship, for study of international affairs in Geneva, but World War II prevented him from accepting it.

Instead, with the outbreak of hostilities in Europe, he abandoned his studies and went to work as a United Press reporter in London. After switching to CBS News in London in 1941, Collingwood covered the worst days of the Nazi blitz; later, h'e reported on the North African campaign and the Allied invasion of Europe. After the Germans surrendered, he covered the singing of the armistice in a little rod schoolhouse in Reinie. Following the war, Collingwood returned to the United States where he covered the United Nations and presidential conventions. He also served for a time as CBS News chief correspondent on the Pacific Coast and later, from 1949 to 1952, as CBS News White House Correspondent.

In 1952, he took a leave of absence to serve as special assistant to the Director of Mutual Security in Averell Harriman, who later became Gov- ernor of New York. i Collingwood. returned to CBS News in 1954 ano resumed his work as one television and radio's outstanding reporters and news analysts.
