CD CD (29) (22) News Hans Bathe: Prophet of Energy (Special) Nobel Prize-winning development in more than five years. "Eyewitness News" on KVOA, Channel 4, is again the No. 1 news whenever it's on the air. That's not so surprising, as Channel 4 has been at the top, or close to it for a long time now. In fact, these latest ratings show that the station improved its share of audiences, reversing the slight erosion it saw in the previous ratings taken in February.

What may be the little bombshell in these physicist Hans Bethe, an ad- latest ratings, taken during May, is that "News-Center 9" haS made SOme Sizable BainS in PPular- liy ai lu p.m., iu iiicpumi Channel 9 has passed K0LD, Channel 13, at that went from 31 percent ot the audience in February' to 34 percent in May, Channel 9 moved up 5 percent, to 30 percent of the audience, while Channel 13 fell 7 J. percent to 23 percent of the audience. In Nielsen," Channel 4 is up 2 percent of the audience at 36 percent, Channel 13 is down 1 percent at 24 percent, and Channel 9 is up 1 percent at 23 percent. At 5 p.m., Arbitron reports Channel 4 from 33 to 32 percent of the audience, Channel 13 dropped 3 percent of the audience and is at 26 percent, and Channel 9 is off 1 percent at 19 percent. In Nielsen, Channel 4 moved up from 31 to 33 percent of the audience, Channel 13 went down from 29 to 27 percent, and Channel 9 held steady with 17 percent of the audience.

In other news slots but where all three stations don't go head-to-head Channel 4 beats Channel 13 at noon but ABC's "General Hospital" on Channel 9 wins. At 4:30 p.m., when Channel 13 was the only station carrying news during the May' ratings, it won the race hands down. And at 6 p.m., -when Channel 4 offers the only newscast, it, too, was No. 1 in the time slot. Here are some other points of interest gleaned from the latest local ratings: The undisputed audience-grabber here dur-ing May was the four-part showing of "Marco Polo," seen by 50 percent or more of the audience each night it was aired.

Its audience size, accord-ing to Nielsen, ranged from 81,000 homes for the -third installment to 97,000 homes for the first installment. Compare that to the estimated 66,000 homes that watch the most popular series, "60 Minutes," each week. Other popular series during the month were the two-part "Inside the Third Reich," "Coming of Ice," "Bob Hope's Birthday Party" and "TV's Greatest Commercials." (1 hr.) CTJ Gunsmoke hour and moved into second place. It has been more than five years since the results of the November 1976 ratings that such a shift has taken place. That time, Channel 4's 10 p.m. news slipped by Channel 13's news and moved into the No. 1 spot, which it hasn't relinquished.

Here are some explanations for this latest shift: CBS prime-time programming was weak during May, filled with reruns and specials that didn't attract large audiences. "Channel 13 News" series couldn't match the viewer interest and ratings popularity of its monthlong anti-crime series in February. What may be the most significant is that viewers may be "burning out" on the flashy headline approach to news used by Channel 13. The style is one that emphasizes reading a lot of stories without going into much depth. If any time is spent on a subject, chances are it's a travel feature or a doctor's report.

(Channel 13 didn't invent this style of reporting, but it's also gratifying to know that this trend away from flashy headline newscasts is also happening elsewhere. The style of reporting the news on Channel 13 is in no way a reflection of the diligence 6f the individual reporters who, by and large, are every bit as hardworking as their counterparts on the other stations.) For years, Tucson's Channel 4 bucked the national trend of flashy news and achieved high ratings anyway. Channel 9 also has opted for enterprise reporting that's both interesting and meaty. Certainly, these latest ratings have to be a blow to Channel 13, particularly since the station had made some sizable gains in February. It will be interesting to see if there will be any changes forthcoming in the news style or whether these ratings will be considered a fluke.

It should be noted that they're not celebrating too much yet at Channel 9. News director Doug Crombie says he's pleased that both of the last two ratings have shown generally growing audiences for "NewsCenter 9" but adds that he won't consider it a trend unless it continues. For the record, here are the audience shares for the local newscasts: At 10 p.m. in the Arbitron ratings, Channel 4 Arbitron 1. "60 Minutes" (CBS, Channel 13) 2.

"M'A'S'H" (6:30 p.m. reruns on Channel 9) 3. "Real People" (NBC. Channel 4) 4. "Quincy" (NBC, Channel 4) 5.
