A.B.Jauk's sermon in the Presbyterian oburcb was one of more than ordinary foroe and eugaged the closest attention of the congregation. His subject was Tbe fats of tbe fruitless fig tree" and contained the following dosing sentences: You say to me, preach away, tell us some thing more of this fruitless fig tree, I cannot I dare not. The parabl" stops here and I must stop too.

You want to know more- there is no more. You would like to know the future fortunes of this fruitless fig tree you cannot know it.you most not know it, you shall not know it. quent silence! I dare not twist another thread about tbe lash. I dare But throw another sbeaf upon the cart lest I break it down. Wise, righteous, eloquent silence! What wisdom iu what Christ says, but obi what power, what pathos and tenderness in hat be does not say.

Suppose be bad told us all, suppose he bad told the future fortune of this fruitless fig tree, suppose be bad told ds that the plea was refused, that God would not bear'ths intercession, then down you would have sunken blank despair; farewell earth, farewell heaven, farewell grace of Jesus, farewell influence of the Holy Spirit, farewell ministry of angels, commun ion of saints, sacraments of peace in heaven, a long, a sad farewell, my day of grace is over, my hour of mercy past, I am left behind a fruitless fig tree. Or suppose, on the other hand, be bad told you the plea was granted, that this tree became a fruitful fig tree. Then what would have happened? I know what would have happened; Those of you who have presumed so long would have con. tinned presuming still. Those of you, who ia spite of God's mercy, have been negleot-iog religion for weeks and months and years, would have neglected it to your dying day always the iron under the hammer of God's wrath, always the ice under the shining of bis gracious promises, I might have tolled tbe knell.

I might have darkened the scene with frequent funerals. Still you would have said that knell is not for me, that gloomy procession is not forme. Therefore I thank my Saviour that be has told us nothing more of this fruitless fig tree, that I 6tand here to-night with tbe msae uncerts'nty imprinted on my forehead as is also impressed ca yours.
