Parks supervisor Frank H. Carpenter, who will ask lor $1,500 to complete the park at City Council's first 1962-68 budget study ses-aian Tuesday, April 18, has supervised the park flevelopment for 14 years.

5 3XC that time, Carpenter has" seen the corner of Eamona and Wells Sts. flourish from a dump to a true landmark. On May 16, San Gabriel Park- was swarm-big with 1,500 children. This has been the biggest Crowd in one day, but the gniuial attendance is increasing steadily. I First in 1960 1 Children have known Jbout the 12-acre park since 1960 when the first 5f three playgrounds was finished.

It took 10 years and $250,000 to complete the play areas and landscaping. An even more encompassing age group can enjoy the Laguna, but parents of tiny tots are advised to watch their children. There is a tempting mountain slide, approximately 18-feet high, which is only one of many big objects in the 2-acre play area. Concrete Sea Life There also is a whale, sea serpent, octopus, seal, starfish, snail, and three dolphins, plus a light house, treasure ship and wharf. Rather than water, they are emerging from a sandy lagoon. It took Benjamin Dominguez, 75, of La Puente, years to build all of the objects out of cement.

First, he shaped the objects with wire mesh and steel rods. Then, concrete was poured and molded by hand. The finishing coat of concrete is in bright colors, about a quarter-inch thick. Most of the slides are smooth cement coated withepoxy. Although the park is popular, enough as it is, there remains an acre of undeveloped land between the Laguna and McKinley Elementary School property.

"I think we were fortunate we went as slow as we did," he continued. "It gave us more time to decide what we actually wanted. The Laguna (last of the playgrounds) was an afterthought. "We had originally planned tennis courts and a blacktop play surface.

I think it would have been a mistake. The entire park is a fill area and heavy rains would have caused the courts to crack." But even more important says Carpenter: Tennis courts couldn't begin to -compare to the Laguna in popularity." So the plans drawn up by USC landscape architecture students were altered. "We had a lot of crazy ideas," Carpenter recalls, "but we had some good ones too." The first stage, called Kiddie Korral, has a freeway circling around and through the tiny tot play area. Nothing larger than a tricycle is allowed, however. There is 'also a wading rently are surveying streets throughout Glendale's La Crescenta section for future installation of sewers.

Preliminary cost for the sewer system to be designed by Perliter and Ingalsbe is $280,000. Estimated costs for the New York street improvement is $100,000 and the storm drain installation $300,000. County and gas tax funds will pay for the latter two projects. Home owners will be assessed under the 1911 Act (payable over a 10-year period) to cover cost of the sewer system. Martini said it is hoped street sewers inside the New York -Foothill -Ho-nolulu-Dunsmore section affecting 13 different streets will be installed and in use within years.
