Fite, missing since June 13 in the Gulf of California near Puerto has not been found and his daughter said yesterday she assumes he is dead. "I can't imagine there's much of a search going on, but the U.S. Consul tells me the search will officially stay open until someone finds the body," Jo Ann Fite said yesterday. Her 74-year-old father and his companion, Verona "Nonie" McKibbin, 75, were on a sailing trip when fishermen found their small boat drifting near Isla San Jorge, about 50 miles southeast of Puerto which is also called Rocky Point.

On June 22, searchers found McKibbin's body on the beach with an empty water container. Authorities said she apparently died from dehydration. Farther down the beach, authorities found a note written by Fite, who said he was headed east toward some black smoke. O'Neill to speak at Oct. 26 dinner Thomas P.

Alfred Saucier, assistant sector chief of the U.S. Border Patrol in Yuma, said 11 of the 22 survivors were taken to San Luis Rio Colorado, a Sonoran border town 25 miles south of here. Two others were returned to Mexico earlier in the week.

Meanwhile, other survivors remained in custody, including two men who were discharged from Yuma Regional Medical Center after treatment for dehydration and heat exhaustion. One survivor, Ruben Ruiz, remains hospitalized but his condition has been upgraded from serious to stable. According to Border Patrol officials, Ruiz tried to kill himself by slitting his throat believing he was going to die in the desert. Two of those in custody have been charged in U.S. District Court with conspiracy to smuggle aliens into the United States.

They are Julio Parada Salazar, 31, of Ixtlan del Rio, Nayarit, and Victor Lopez Basua, 35, of Culiacan, Sinaloa. Mexican officials also have arrested a San Luis man, Manuel Partida Beltran, 37, who allegedly was the mastermind for the trek. The Border Patrol rescued the Mexicans from a desert area about 15 miles south of Dateland after an Air Force helicopter crew spotted two of the survivors Monday afternoon.
