TUCSON, SUNDAY, AUGUST 29, 1976 THE ARIZONA DAILY STAR PAGE EIGHT SECTION Fuel Altered Nationals Attract 6 Arizona Cars Jackson Scared After Being Hit 1976 Chicago Sun-Times Even the big guys experience the terror. They don't like to admit it but the fear of a baseball thrown at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour gets to all of them. A couple of weeks ago Reggie Jackson of the Baltimore Orioles was hit in the eye. With a pitch. Long live Phoenix International Raceway. Everybody knew the tricky one-mile paved oval built southwest of Phoenix as Phoenix International Raceway or PIR. When it was sold three years ago and renamed FasTrack, well it just didn't fit. Oh, the track itself is pretty fast but the people running it weren't too swift. It was just a toy for now-bankrupt millionaire Malcolm Bricklin.

It never had good management and should have died a long time ago. Only the spring and fall U.S. Auto Club events, and a couple of races by promoters leasing it, kept the track alive. Hopefully, all of this has changed now. A group of Phoenix businessmen, headed by Bob Fletcher, can get to being blinded.

Antonelli, who received his fuel license two weeks ago, will pilot the car for the first time in competition.

The Speed Sport, a recently-completed car owned by Lyle Fisher, will be driven either by Fisher or Mike Savage. He was talking about a deadly serious business, and it was clear he wanted to communicate the terror a batter feels when he realizes that a pitcher is throwing at him deliberately.

"I went up to bat for the first time in the game and I was really afraid," Jackson said. And then Reggie Jackson hit the first pitch for a home run. But even that didn't dispel the anxiety. "The second time I came to bat," he said, "I was still afraid to look for the breaking ball for fear that I wouldn't be able to get out of the way." "That makes you realize they have control. When they hit you, it isn't any accident.

DARRELL WALTRIP Waltrip Threat At Bristol BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) The National Assn. for Stock Car Auto Racing's point battle continues today in the Volunteer 400 Grand National race with Darrell Waltrip of Dayto-na Beach, a big threat to throw a roadblock at the leading contenders.

Waltrip served notice he means business in the race at the highbar.ked Bristol International Speedway track by MOTOR SPORTS "I was afraid to come back to try to hit again," Jackson was saying as he sat in the Little Corporal restaurant in Chicago eating lunch. Finally, PIR may realize its potential. But his doctor told him he couldn't because of a heart condition. So the 16-year-old boy would read all he could about the game: books, newspaper stories, sports magazines. He was a Chicago Cubs fan and his favorite player was left fielder Jose Cardenal. He admired Cardenal for the great catches he made in the outfield. Dwight also liked to stay close to the game.

He couldn't play, so he became the batboy for a neighborhood Softball team. Whenever there was a game or practice session, he would walk over to a park near his home in south suburban Calumet Park and watch the Ro-sie's Sports Club team play. Dwight didn't mind being a batboy, said his stepfather, Frank J. Jendras-zak. But Dwight, Jedras-zak added, wanted to get into a game.

Last Sunday, he got his chance. The sports club was holding an intrasquad game and it was one player short. Dwight persuaded the players to let him just go into the field and get anything hit his way. In the fifth inning, with a runner on first base, the batter hit a pop-up behind second base. Dwight raced back and the ball struck him on the chest.

But as he fell, he closed his glove over the ball and was still holding it when he got up. Dwight took a few steps, staggered and fell. The other players tried to revive him and an ambulance was called. Dwight Dillon was dead on arrival at St. Francis Hospital of Blue Island.

"It's a terrible thing," his stepfather said. "But I suppose nothing could ever have kept him away from baseball. He loved it so much." work on the track surface, do some painting and cleanup and make sure the track is as safe as possible," said Fletcher. Jones is tied for second at 84 points with Jackie Oliver of England, who qualified third behind Redman and Teddy Pilette but who dropped out in the eighth lap with brake problems and finished 25th. The Havasu Classic World Outboard Championship has been revived and will be run over the Thanksgiving Day weekend, but the Havasu Sports Federation wants to test the market earlier than that. The California Outboard Racing Assn. will bring 60 to 70 boats to Lake Havasu Sept. 12 for a day of sprint races on the mile and a quarter course.

The Havasu Classic was a victim of the late, not-so-great fuel shortage, but for nine years prior to that it was one of the top events in Arizona. Classic official Skip Guarini said last week that there is already a $50,000 purse and it's expected to grow. Tom Price of Britain, in a Shadow, was third in 1:21.55, and countryman John Watson, in an American-built Penske, was fourth in 1:21.75.

Watson had the second-fastest practice time Friday. In the fifth qualifying spot was Clay Regazzoni of Switzerland, driving for Ferrari, which earlier this week announced its return to the Grand Prix circuit. Rotty has won three regional events this season. Topping the pro stock points list is Warren Johnson, winner of the American Hot Rod Assn. Winter Nationals at Tucson Dragway this year. Johnson leads Larry Lombardo, 7,626 to 7,307. Rotty has 3,247.

Other NHRA point leaders going into next weekend's U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis are Richard Tharp in top fuel and Don Prudhomme in funny car. Tharp is driving Candies and Hughes car. The latest AHRA point standings available show Tom Hoover as the funny car leader, but that's because Prudhomme won't race in AHRA president Jim Tice's national events. Winter Nationals winner Frank Bradley, second in the NHRA ranks, leads the AHRA point standings while Ken Don-dero leads Johnson in pro stock.

Only 12 late model stock cars made it to the track near Casa Grande while 24 raced in Tucson at Corona Speedway. CAR is regrouping but not to do battle with Corona.

The Saturday night programs at CAR have not been as successful as hoped or as successful as the Sunday shows the track started the season with. Serious consideration is being given to returning to Sunday racing. Ruben Federico of Tucson won the main event. Dan McPhedran and Barry Warner were second and third. Herb Laing, who started the season helping CAR promote its races in Tucson and then wound up in the middle of the fight earlier this month, says at least it was good for drawing attention to racing.

"I believe in everything I've done and said," Laing said. "I wouldn't back down if the situation were the same again. But all I really want is to get everybody racing again. "I really want to see racing go." Laing and a small group of Tucson racers became disgruntled over track conditions they felt were unsafe and vowed not to race at Corona again. So CAR and Corona butted heads last week.

The track surface at Corona has since been repaired and Laing said he'll race at Corona next Saturday night if he gets his car repaired in time. He cracked the heads while running with a faulty pressure cap last week.
