Tht Reuiarkuiliin Jourueylojra of a weight g2O GoldplecA weeks' ago, in! performance of his duty, Pnblio Printer Benedict ex a quantity of waste gold leaf to the mint, with the request that its value bo returned to him in gold coin. He did not advertise the gold leaf for sale, as he might 'have done, bnt preferred to deal with Sam direct In a few days he received by express from the mint for the gold loaf several bags of gold coin, the value of which was 1,619.54.

Bo acknowledged its receipt and at once sent it to the treasury department to be placed to tho credit of miscellaneous receipts of the treasury. The gold coin contained In tho bags received from the mint waa taken out by the treasurer and counted and weighed, as tho law prescribes. Ont of the $1,610.64 pne, $20 goldpiece, according to tho treasury scales, was exactly $1.35 light Treasurer Morgan wrote the public printer to that effect- and requested that he at once forward $1.25 to make good the shortage of the $20 goldpieca The public printer did not propose to pay tho $1.25 out of his own pocket, so be wrote to Superintendent Townsend of the Philadelphia mint, informing bim that one $20 goldpiece was short $1.25 and to please forward that amount This was done. In his letter containing the $1.25 shortage Superintendent Townsend expressed regret that tho public printer had not returned the original $20 goldpieco. Mr.

Benedict on receiving 5 the $1.25 sent it to the treasury department and got a receipt for it This, he thought, wonld close the transaction. Bnt it didn't The treasury officials, it seems, satisfied. Several days afterward th6 public printer received the $20 goldpiece stamped across its face "light $1,85," with the request that.be return to the department $18.75, BO as to make his account balance, the department having received $1.25. This was a surprise to the but as he was dealing with government officials he thought ho could stand the racket if could. He sent the light $20 goldpiece to the Philadelphia mint, with the request that they forward Treasurer Morgan a certified draft for $18.75.

After a lapse of nearly a week La received a communication from Superintendent Townseud stating that he had weighed the disputed coin, and that he found a of bat $1 and requested the public printer to return to him the 25 ccuta he had paid out in excess. A demand was made on the treasury for- 25 cents. It was received, and in turn public Printer Benedict forwarded it to the taint This ended the transaction, but the questjion arises, Who made good tho shortage in the $2Q goldpiece? Did the superintendent of the Philadelphia make the shortage good ant of his, own pocket, car was it charged to the government? Aud, again, if the officials of the mint weigh the gold coin, as the lav requires, how is it possible for a Ugh); coin to get out, ajud must not something be wrong with the scales used by the treasury department? The treaeuty officials stamped the coin $1.26 light The mint people say it ia hot $1 light Had this matter occurred with 1 private individuals instead, of government offlj the privato individual would no doubt have had tq. pockot the Powell has a positive cure for fowlcs that have the gaps, or roupe. dsHl The Michigan Central will on Snpt.
