(AP) Nebraska coach Tom Osborne called a 56-12 romp over Utah State in Saturday's college football opener only a fair performance by his second-ranked j- Cornhuskers.

The Corn- huskers returned for touchdowns against Kansas in 1983. "Our punt coverage really broke down," Utah State coach Chuck Shelton said. Garner kicked a 26-yard field goal in the third quarter following a fumble recovery at the Nebraska 21, and Taylor ran 58 yards for another Husker score. Jones added his third touchdown on a 13-yard run and Smith broke his long punt return in the 21-point third quarter. Reserve quarterback Clete Blakeman ran 10 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 56-6 Nebraska lead. Jones rushed for 118 on 18 carries before leaving the game midway through the third quarter.

(AP) Oklahoma State fullback thurman Thomas punched out 164 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Cowboys to a victory over Tulsa in a non-conference college football opener Saturday night.

Thomas, a 5-11, 195-pound senior, picked up 118 yards in the first half as Oklahoma State of the Big Eight Conference capitalized on Tulsa special team miscues for a 26-14 halftime lead. Cowboy tailback Barry Sanders set the tone for the game dominated by the offenses when he streaked 100 yards for a touchdown with the opening kickoff.
