Nabors returns for second stint Lassie starts 17th year in 7-part series "Lassie" premieres its 17th season with an unprecedented seven-part adventure story in which the canine star begins the miracle of birth and mother love, on "Lassie" Sunday, Sept.

Lassie finds her perfect mate, Duke, a beautiful purebred male collie, and spends an idyllic in terlucle, only to be separated by a savage battle with a killer dog. Now awaiting motherhood, the badly injured Lassie lies unconscious at the side of a road and is carried by a stranger toward a distant and uncertain future. As the seven-part story, which has the overall title "The Saga of Lassie's Puppies," unfolds during the remaining episodes, Lassie will give birth to three puppies and then face the dangers of the desert and a ghost town, plus the pleasures of being with some friendly ranchers, as she moves from place to place hunting suitable home; for the pups. Lassie will be entirely on hei own this season with no regular supporting characters.

Return slated for Johnny Cash The Hmef.R«port«r Sept. II, 1171 "The Johnny Cash Show" whistles out of the station house and into a bright new season on ABC Television Wednesday, Sept. 23 (9-10 p.m.) with Liza MinneUi, Arlo Guthrie and Ray Charles riding up front as guests. The hit ABC variety series, acclaimed by critics and view, ers alike last winter in its first prune-time showing, enters its first full season with the same crew of winners stoking up the musical express. Joining Cash will be "the family" regulars Carl Perkins, the Tennessee Three, the Carter Family and the Statler Brothers.

In addition there will again be a weekly lineup of top guest artists from a variety of entertainment fields. Football movies bring problems in Cosby opener Teacher-coach Chet Kincaid (Bill Cosby) finds film to be a rewarding medium when he takes on the added role of direc tor, in "Anytime You're Ready C.K.," season premiere of "The Bill Cosby Show" on NBC Tele vision Sunday, Sept. 13 (in col or, p.m.). Chet is talked into 'buying a movie camera for his footbal team when several squad mem bers suggest game films as means of improving their pei formance on the field. One the players Alex (Gordon Ho ban), is hard-pressed to stay away from practice after suffering a permanent football injury.

Chet seeks to encourage the lad by offering him a position on the team as assistant coach, but Alex refuses. Meanwhile, Chet brushes up on his photography by making two home movies, both of which turn out to be humorous but dismal failures. One day during a scrimmage, Chet hands Alex his camera as he goes to give instructions. He later realized Alex is really a much better cameraman and persuades him to finish school and go on to college to become a film technician. 7 Mod Squad 1 will begin third season "The Mod Squad," starring Michael Cole, Clarence Williams III and Peggy Lipton as members of a special police squad and Tige Andrews as their official contact, opens its third season on ABC Television Tuesday, Sept.

22 p.m.). The primary objective of Pete Cochrane (Cole), Line Hayes (Williams) and Julie Barnes, (Miss Lipton) is to protect other young people from adult criminals who try to exploit them. In the season premiere episode, "The Long Road Home," Pete accidently hits and critically injures a beautiful young woman, Billie Fletcher, while chasing a burglary suspect in his car. Pete is grief-stricken over the accident and makes frequent visits to Billie at the hospital. As they fall love, Capt.

Greer (Andrews) learns that Billie is the sister of the escaped suspect and a member of his gang. Anjanette Comer guest-stars as Billie Fletcher with Lou Antonio as Case. 'Julia' loses, regains nursing job in debut Julia (Diahann Carroll) gets fired from her nursing job after Astrospace Industries loses an important contract and must cut its payrolls, in the episode, "Ready, Aim, Fired," the new season's premiere colorcast of NBC Television's "Julia," Tuesday, Sept. 15 p.m.). Dr.

Chegley (Lloyd Nolan) is ordered to fire Julia instead of Hannah Yarby (Lurene Tuttle) because Julia has less seniority. But Hannah solves the problem when she announces she is get-j ting married and volunteers to! be fired. Fred Williamson is featured The whole happy family back together again with an addition. This time around It's "Danny Thomas in Make Room for Granddadcly," new ABC-TV series premiering Wednesday, Sept. 23.

The clan addition is little Michael Hughes (front left) as the grandson and major source of confusion to Danny. Returning are Marjorie Lord (R), Danny Thomas, Rusty Hamer and Angela Cartwrlght (rear left to right) as their kids. A third generation arrives "Danny Thomas in Make Room For Granddaddy," featuring three generations of the Danny Williams family, premieres on ABC Television Wednesday, Sept. 23, p.m.). Joining Danny Thomas, who stars as entertainer Danny Williams, are Marjorie Lord as his wife, Kathy, Angela Cartwright as daughter Linda, Michael Highes as 6-year-old grandson Michael, Sid Melton as Charley Halper, Hans Conried as Uncle To- noose and Rusty Hamer as Danny and Kathy's son, Rusty.

Guest-starring in the premiere episode, "Make Room For Grandson," is Sherry Jackson as Terry, Michael's mother. In the segment, Danny and Kathy return from a year's stay in Aust- ralia and almost immediately are confronted with a delicate situation. Their, daughter, Terry, is leaving for Japan to join her Army-based husband and must leave her young son behind. Dany impulsively insists that the boy be left with him and Kathy, rather than with his other grandparents, the Johnsons. Rusty and Linda question such an arrangement because of their father's "advanced" age, but Danny laughs it off.

Michael moves in, and his energetic activities soon prove too much for his grandfather. Despite Uncle Tonoose's protests and his own consicence, Danny now feels that Michael might stay with his other grandparents but later he changes his mind. "The Jim Nabors Hour," musical-variety series starring Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton, returns for its second season Thursday, Sept. 17 (8-9 p.m.) in color on CBS Television. Also returning are cast regulars Ronnie Schell and Karen Morrow as well as the Nabors Kids choral group and the Tony Mordente Dancers.

As in its initial season, "The Jim Nabors Hour" will present one or more well-known guest stars each week, who will join the regular cast members in comedy sketches, musical production numbers and other special features. (In subsequent episodes Samantha and her husband Damn decide to attend the Witches Convention and, for the first time in its iix-year history, series action was filmed on location. Some eight upcoming episodes were shot in the historic streets and sites of Salem and Gloucester, where witches achieved some prominence in Colonial times.) Agnes Moorehead co-stars as Samantha's witch mother, Endora; David White portrays Damn's boss, Larry Tate, an; Jane Connell quest stars Hepzibah. Ed Brown, Officer Whitfield and aide Mark as Steve Bruce, Betty Beaird as Marie Waggedorn, Marc Copage as Corey Baker, and Michael Link as Earl J. Waggedorn.
