With Antonelli trying to get his feet under him in the first half, the Red Hawks jumped out to a quick 21-6 lead on a pair of long touchdown receptions by Sean Armstrong in the first quarter and Fred DeFinis' 49-yard interception return early in the second. "When you can score on defense, it really gives you a lift," said Montclair State coach Rick Gian-carlo, whose team also got a 50-yard interception return from Derrick Simmons. lona rallied not once, but twice in the second half.

A 6-yard touchdown pass from Antonelli to fullback Rich Wroblewski and the subsequent extra point by Ghio tied it at 21-21 with 13:26 remaining. Montclair State responded with an 11-play, 85-yard drive to take the lead again, but then Antonelli found Calacione for a dramatic touchdown that seemed as if it would set up a fantastic finish. Or so they thought "The whole game just fell apart after that extra point," Antonelli said. "We were trying to get the ball back and we did, but we couldn't get the job done." Calacione caught six passes for 138 yards and a touchdown, and Harrison's Rudy Arcara tied a career high with 83 yards on 20 rushes in the loss. Although the Gaels have a true freshman kicker in Jonathan Ghio, coach Fred Mariani blamed the missed extra point on too much penetration up the middle. "At that time, we need to be tougher than that," Mariani said. "I think we hurt ourselves more than our opponent hurt us." Five interceptions two of them returned for touchdowns also hurt lona (0-1). Antonelli, who was making his first collegiate start, had learned that he would be playing only two days before the game, when expected starter Mike Biehl suffered a small tear in his left anterior cruciate ligament as he twisted his knee during practice. Biehl, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, said he would be ready to play in the Gaels' next game on Sept 18 at Sacred Heart Mariani said he was-. lona rallies twice in second half, still loses to Montclair Paul Suwan The Journal News NEW ROCHELLE Dennis Calacione said he felt like he had been punched in the stomach, and few of the people on the lona sideline could really disagree with him. With the Gaels trailing by a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter of yesterday's season opener against Montclair State, Calacione had somehow beaten two defenders and hauled in a 36-yard pass in the right corner of the end zone to get his team back into the game.

All that was left to be done was the kicking of a routine extra point. Then Calacione heard the sickening thud of the football slamming into someone's body. "I never went from this high to this low in my entire life," the junior wide receiver said, motioning with his hands. "It was a heart-breaker." lona would not recover from the blocked kick, giving up two more touchdowns en route to a AREA COLLEGE FOOTBALL RUMOR-LEAGUE NOTEBOOK Local players progressing nicely 02 V0K Rhode Island sneaks in win Aviles Kingsbury Mahoney Novinsky Slocum Five local products to keep an eye on Mike Aviles, Class A Wilmington (Kansas City), shortstop Bobby Kingsbury, Class A Hickory (Pittsburgh), outfielder Collin Mahoney, Class A Oneonta (Detroit), pitcher John Novinsky, Class AA Huntsville (Milwaukee), pitcher Brian Slocum, Class A Kinston (Cleveland), pitcher Davis' fourth TD with 1:19 left spoils coach Foley's debut Staff and wire reports Quarterback Jayson Davis scored his fourth touchdown on a 1-yard sneak with 1:19 left to give visiting Rhode Island a 37-36 win over Fordham yesterday, spoiling Ed Foley's debut as coach of the Rams. The visitors amassed 398 yards on 82 carries and outgained Fordham 422-244 in total offense. But Fordham's defense scored two first-half touchdowns, on an 8-yard fumble return by NaQuinton Gainous and a 50-yard interception return by Reshard Hicks. And Derric Daniels, taking over for graduated star quarterback Kevin Eakin, threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Steve Porco, then ran for the 2-point conversion to give Fordham (0-1) a 36-30 lead with 4:57 left. The following, in alphabetical order, is based upon recent performances and upward trends, draft position and the ability to progress within a specific organization: Mike Avlles (Class A Wilmington, SS): The 5-foot-ll, 195-pound Concordia product has become much more selective with his swings and made an impressive jump from the rookie Arizona League to the Carolina League.

The 23-year-old Aviles was the Kansas City Royals' seventh-round pick in 2003 after being named the Division II player of the year as a senior and batted .363 with six home runs and 39 RBI last season. This year, the righty-hit-ting Aviles was batting .302 (fifth in the league) with a league-leading 38 doubles, six home runs and 68 RBI. And even without major-league range, his defense is better, too. "That's one part that's improved dramatically," said Blue Rocks manager Billy Gardner adding the Royals planned to send Aviles to instructional ball. "Being able to leave his bat in the dugout is one of the major areas he had to improve and he has.

I think he's done things here in order to get to the next level (Class AA)." Bobby Kingsbury (Class A Hickory, RF): Playing two seasons at the same level is normally not a good sign, but the Fordham product has benefited in his South Atlantic League encore. While his .243 batting average was only a slight improvement from last season's .223, his 19 home runs, 63 RBI and 24 doubles represent a nice jump from last season's 11, 48, 16. Hickory manager Dave Clark said he never expected such power numbers out of the 6-1, 179-pound Kingsbury, drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the eighth round in 2002. Plus, the 24-year-old lefty hitter gained experience playing for Greece in the just-concluded Olympics. "He came in more subtle, more mature and got off to a good start," Clark said.

"My evaluation of Bobby is there's something there and it may come late. We've started seeing spurts of it" Collin Mahoney (Class A Oneonta, RHP): The Patterson resident, the Detroit Tigers' EXTRA BASES ROUNDUP was recovered at the Rhode Island 12 by Cary Williams. But on the next possession, Rhode Island drove 81 yards on 11 plays, converting on fourth-and-one at the 7 just prior to the winning score. And Daniels, who completed 14 of 31 for 132 yards and three touchdowns, was intercepted on fourth down to end Fordham's final drive. Fordham jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Rhode Island's first possession as Davis fumbled a pitch on the Rhode Island 8, which was recovered by Gainous and returned for a touchdown.

Later in the quarter, Anthony Offord blocked an Anthony DiFi-no punt, which was recovered by Rhode Island's Rashaad Carter on the Fordham 20. Two plays later, Jerell Jones a running back from Roosevelt High in Yonkers brought it in from the 9 to tie the score 7-7 with 17 seconds left in the quarter. Early in the second quarter, Rhode Island took over on its 20 and moved 80 yards on nine plays, all on the ground. Davis capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 9:44 remaining in the half to put Rhode Island up 14-7. After going 6-7 with a 4.46 ERA last season, Slocum, 15-5 with a 4.01 ERA, 96 strikeouts and 37 walks in 24 starts this season, is leading both the league and the Cleveland Indians' affiliates in victories. That's more of what the Indians expected when they picked him in the second round of the 2002 draft out of Villanova.

"He's shown signs of throwing an above-average changeup and a good slider that he can put in the zone and those are two things that he was really limited on last year," Kinston pitching coach Greg Hib-bard said. "His arm slot has stayed more consistent and that's allowed him to put his breaking ball in the strike zone." Slocum, whose fastball is averaging 92 mph, likely will start next season at Class AA. Lefthander Jarrad Lavergne was named the NY-P pitcher of the week after going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA over 14 innings with 16 strikeouts and one walk. Mets update: Class A Brooklyn clinched the NY-P McNamara Division with a 3-2 win over Hudson Valley Thursday. The Cyclones will open the first round of the playoffs tomorrow against Tri-City. Yankees update: Class A Tampa right-hander Eric Abreu was named the Florida State League's co-pitcher of the week after going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA over seven innings, striking out four, walking one and allowing one hit Reach Andrew Gross at agrossthejournalnews.com. at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs, leading the NL wild-card race, haven't played since Wednesday night in Montreal. They came back to Chicago to gauge the storm rather than go on to Florida. There's a chance the teams will make up one of the postponed games when the teams meet at Wrigley Field this weekend with a doubleheader on either Friday or Saturday. That means the Marlins would have to give up a home game, although there is a slight possibility they would be allowed to bat last in one of those games. Exam shows no serious problems: Los Angeles pitcher Odalis Perez was optimistic after an examination showed no serious problems with his throwing arm.

Perez was limited to five innings Thursday night by left biceps tightness. He saw a specialist the following day. "Everything is fine," Perez said. "I'm getting treatment The pain is not there anymore." Dye sidelined: Oakland Athletics right fielder Jermaine Dye missed yesterday's game because of a fractured left thumb and isn't expected to be back in the lineup for some time. fourth-round pick this past June, is becoming more comfortable as a reliever after spending his first two seasons at Clemson as a catcher and then only pitching part-time as a junior.

The 21-year-old Mount St. Michael graduate has a fastball that has been clocked as high as 97 mph, a solid slider and a changeup. "He's got a high ceiling on the mound because of his arm strength," Oneonta manager Mike Rojas said. "IU see him throw 96 or 97 and then hell lose a little bit of control because of mechanics. That's something that can be fixed." The 6-4, 235-pound Mahoney had two saves and a 4.85 ERA in his first 20 appearances in the short-season New York-Penn League, with 29 strikeouts, 20 walks and 36 hits allowed in 29 innings.

Rojas said he would be sent to instructional ball to continue to work on his delivery. John Novinsky (Class AA Huntsville, RHP): After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2002, the 6-3, 180-pound lona product experienced shoulder soreness this past May, his first season in the Milwaukee Brewers' organization. But the 25-year-old converted starter whose fastball averages 91-93 mph and who also throws a sharp breaking ball and a knuckle curve has recovered to compile a 7-1 record, a 2.93 ERA and 17 saves in 45 appearances, striking out 60 and walking 15 in 61 innings. The Brewers acquired Novinsky from the St Louis Cardinals, who drafted him in the ninth round of the 2000 draft. "He came up a little bit sore but we cleaned up his mechanics," Huntsville pitching coach Fred Dabney said.

"I feel John's got a very good opportunity to pitch in the major leagues. The thing he needs to improve a little bit is his fastball command." He will get that chance in the Arizona Fall League. Brian Slocum (Class A Kinston, RHP): The 64, 190-pound Eastchester resident is thriving in against the Tigers. Kazmir (1-1) has made three starts for Tampa Bay since being called up from Class AA Montgomery last month. The left-hander allowed four hits over five scoreless innings in his major-league debut Aug.

23 at Seattle. He struggled in his next two starts against Oakland and Detroit, allowing 10 runs, 13 hits and seven walks over eight innings. Cubs wait: Manager Dusty Baker found himself awake at 3 a.m. yesterday morning and immediately turned on the Weather Channel for an update on Hurricane Frances. "I didn't see any way for us to go down there and play.

Plus I'm seeing 2xk million people going north. That doesn't make much sense for us to be going south," Baker said after the Cubs' third and final game with the Florida Marlins today at Pro Player Stadium was postponed. "Like I said before, I mean life and death and safety of your team and the people in Florida who live in Florida, thaf No. 1. That supersedes baseball every time," Baker said while his team went through a workout Kazmir might get nod vs.
