bv THE GEORGE H. WIMBERG FUNERAL HOME, Ventnor, N.J. By Ralph Cipriano Inquirer Stall Writer Marion Van Urk, 83, a pianist who founded the Academy of Music's Morning Musicale series to provide a forum for a generation of promising young musicians, died Friday of a heart attack while on a trip to Silver City, N.M. Born Marion Packard in Redfield, S.D., Mrs. Van Urk, a short, vivacious woman, worked as a voice coach, accompanist and duo pianist in Chicago and New York in the 1920s and '30s.

She coached and accompanied singers for everything from NBC Radio and the Ziegfield Follies to the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall but, because of conventions of the day, seldom got her moment in the limelight. "I was a musical workhorse," Mrs. Van Urk told the Philadelphia Daily News in a 1969 interview. "I was an NBC staff pianist; I went out on the road a lot, and I coached innumerable singers for their Town Hall recitals in New York City, although I never played there," she said in the interview. "They must have a man as accompanist.

It's traditional, I guess." Mrs. Van Urk said then that although she made good money as a musician during the Depression, she was saddened by what happened to some of her colleagues. "It was heartbreaking to see, all around me, such great talent, brilliance and genius being wasted," she said. "The commercial managers had a lot of artists to work with I saw artists in their 30s and 40s still looking for the breaks that didn't come." "They sold shoes at Gimbels and worked as hotel clerks while existing on the fringes of the music business," she said. "They lost all sense of musical dignity.

They became sad, discouraged, disillusioned." So Mrs. Van Urk, the wife of an insurance-company executive, decided to do something about it. What was needed, she decided, was a forum for young musicians that would bridge the gap between the conservatory and a professional career. After she, her husband, Frederick T. Van Urk, and two children moved to Philadelphia in 1942, she became involved with the Philadelphia Orchestra's West Philadelphia Committee.

Under its auspices, in 1962, she' launched what continues today as the Morning Musicale Series in the Ballroom of the Academy of Music. For the last quarter-century, three mornings a year, the West Philadelphia Committee has sponsored the musicales to showcase young artists, using the proceeds, among other things, to provide orchestra tickets for local music students. In 1967, Mrs. Van Urk became the first woman appointed to the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Orchestra. In October 1987, during the 25th-anniversary concert of the Morning Musicale, Mrs.

Van Urk, who was living in Northern California at the time, was introduced to the crowd at the Academy of Music's ballroom. Mrs. Van Urk also founded Franklin Concerts, a nonprofit concert agency for young musicians at the start of their careers, in 1965 with the help of her husband. Going door-to-door to college officials, Mrs. Van Urk lined up a number of concerts at college campuses in eastern Pennsylvania that would pay young musicians the then-lofty fee of $100 a concert One of the artists who performed at H.

Stoneham, 86; moved Giants west Associated Press SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Horace C. Stoneham, 86, who pioneered major league baseball's move to the West Coast by announcing in August 1957 that the New York Giants would move to San Francisco, died Sunday in a Scottsdale nursing home. Mr. Stoneham took control of the team in 1936 after the death of his father and remained in charge until selling it in 1976.

During that time, the Giants won four National League pennants and one World Series while in New York, and one league title in San Francisco. But it was the Giants' cross-country move that made Mr. Stoneham most prominent. Hurt by declining attendance in the deteriorating Polo Grounds, Mr. Stoneham moved the team to California.

Two months after Mr. Stoneham disclosed the move, the Brooklyn Dodgers and owner Walter O'Malley said they were bound for Los Angeles. Mr. Stoneham was one of the last of the baseball entrepreneurs with no outside business interests. "Horace's whole life was baseball.

He devoted himself to it. He was an owner for the players, for the fans, and he loved the game," said Chub Feeney, a former Giants executive and president of the National League. Mr. Stoneham was born in Jersey City, N.J, on July 10, 1903. He grew up at the side of his father, Charles A.

Stoneham, attending games in the Polo Grounds when John J. McGraw was the Giants manager. Marion Van Urk In a 1969 photograph the first Franklin Concert was Lambert Orkis, currently a professor of piano at Temple University and principal keyboardist at the National Symphony in Washington. Orkis, who was 19 at the time, said he never forgot the experience of stepping on a concert stage for the first time as a professional. "It gave me an extended performing experience outside the cloistered confines of the conservatory," he recalled.

"Here you are actually out there, and your teacher wasn't there." Orkis also said he never forgot the ride he got to the concert from Mrs. Van Urk's daughter Mary. "I had never seen the inside of a Cadillac before," he said. "We felt real important." Orkis said Mrs. Van Urk had a big impact on his career.

"She was a great lady." Orkis said. "She was enthusiastic, incredibly generous with her time," he said. "It is a real loss. She was a real friend, and I felt very devoted to her all my life." Daniel Webster, an Inquirer music critic, said the Franklin Concerts were a milestone for the Philadelphia area. "It really was an important program that got young professionals out to university audiences," said Webster, who attended the concerts during the 1960s.

"It was a program ahead of its time that was copied in other places around the country." After moving to Northern California in 1970, Mrs. Van Urk continued her interest in and support of young artists. The Van Urks ran an annual concert series featuring a variety of artists from 1974 to 1989 in Atherton and Palo Alto. She is survived by her husband of more than 58 years; daughters Ramo na Cole and Mary Gottschalk; five grandchildren, and a brother, F. Wayne Packard.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Palo Alto Cultural Center. Instead of flowers, the family prefers that donations in her memory be directed to Principia College, El-sah, III; the Pocket Opera, 25 Taylor Street, San Francisco, or a charity of choice.
