These included 395 incumbents, almost all of whom faced opposition in their relection bids.

Only half a dozen cities had ballots ithout council contests and a strong write-in campaign developed in one of those. All general law cities and a number of chartered cities held elections. Voters went to the polls in 66 cities in Los Angeles County, 23 in Orange Countv and 94 Southland cities beyond Los Angeles and Orange counties.
