The company's founder, Robert C. Wian, decided to make a career of the restaurant business while still in high school. Upon graduation he went to work in a restaurant to get experience. In 1936 Bob Wia n' dream materialized in the form of an old diner on the main street of his town, Glendale. The price was $300 and, in order to raise it, Bob sold his most prized possession--his car.

Along with this sacrifice went a 16 hour, seven-day work week. It was in those early days that Bob's philosophy of operating a restaurant crystallized, he savs. Serve the best quality food, at moderate prices, in spotless surroundings, with courtesy and hospitality. This philosophy has never varied and is greatly responsible for the multi-million dollar enterprise that is Bob's today, according to Wian. One evening members of an orchestra stopped in and asked for something different than just a plain hamburger.

Thinking for a moment, Bob sliced a bun twice to accommodate two patties of beef. He applied his special relish and fresh mayonnaise, added crisp lettuce, a slice of cheese and presented his innovation for approval. The response was immediate and, as now known, enduring. At present there are more than 600 franchised Big Boy restaurants located in 40 states and Canada. In addition there are over 50 Bob's Big Boy Family Restaurants in Southern California.

Bob's also has a retail food division which makes some of the same quality food served in Bob's restaurants available for home use.
