"We not only don't get the competition in the United States," he pointed out, "but we can't even persuade the meets to put on a steeplechase. Deacon Jones (the other American steeplechaser) and I have telephoned meet directors personally and asked them to put on steeplechase races and have been turned down." Beatty, like Truex and Young a paperweight, observed that the American record for the 5,000 meters in 1956 was 14:26. "Maybe they had a right to sneer at us then," he said.

"But my record of 13:51.7 is respectable now." CHICAGO W) The heavy work is over but the tough job is ahead for the College All-Stars who meet the Philadelphia Eagles Fri-' day night in the annual All-Star football game in Soldier Field. The National Football League champions are two touchdown favorites over the collegians but many believe this All-Star team, which plans to employ a pro-type attack, has an excellent chance to defeat the Eagles. Speed, size and talent is plentiful in the All-Star camp. But experience is the professionals' forte. to expectations.

King Hill, late of the St. Louis Cardinals, might be at the controls for the Eagles Friday. Graham has at his dis- Eosal three capable quarter-acks in Bill Kilmer of UCLA, Norm Snead of Wake Forest, and Tom Matte of Ohio State. This trio will throw passes to a speedy group of ends and halfbacks who include Joe Bellino of Navy, Mike Ditka of Pitt, John Brewer of Mississippi, and El Kimbrough of Northwestern. The Stars, however, will have to provide protection for their offense, and Graham has gone all out this year to match the pros in size.

Nearly half of the 56-man squad is made up of players weighing between 230 and 285 pounds. The game will draw a crowd of around 65,000. It will be televised nationally via ABC at 7 p.m. MST. The pros hold a 17-8 edge in the colorful classic with two games ending in ties.

The All-Stars, coached by Otto Graham, had their first taste of professional competition last week in a scrimmage against the Chicago Bears in Rensselaer, Ind. The All-Stars battled the Bears to a 14-14 tie. George Halas, owner-coach of the Bears, called the collegians the best All-Star squad he has seen in the last 11 years. One factor in the All-Stars' favor is that, the Eagles will not be operating with the same quarterback who led to the NFL title. Norm Van Brocklin retired at the end of the season and is coaching the Minnesota Vikings.

Sonny Jurgensen has been groomed to replace Van Brocklin but reports from the Eagle camp in Hershey, are that Jurgensen has failed to live up Gonzalez, Phila. 78 253 39 II .320 Plnson, Cincinnati 103 412 65 131 .318 Mays, San Fran. 100 381 91 121 .318 "Everyone talks about how the rest of the world is catching up to us in most of the track events. Well, how about the way we are catching up to the Europeans in the events we never bothered with the 10,000 meters, the steeplechase and 5,000 meters?" Truex shocked the 30,000 spectators who turned out for the second day of the United States-Poland meet Sunday by winning the 10.000 meters in 30:08.4. This is a European, and particularly a Central European specialty.

Young is so hepped up over trying to get the record that when he gets out of the army, he is going to head for the University of Oregon graduate school (if he's accepted), and work under. Bill Bowerman. "I need a good long-distance coach," said Young. "Think of the tremendous progress we have made in the last two years. I was second in the national championships in 1959 in 9:36.

Phil Coleman's 9.21 won it." Young thinks the Europeans get a lot of good competition because they HOME RUNS RUNS BATTED IN Robinson, Cin. 32 Robinson, Cln. 93 Mays, San Fran. 29 Cepeda, San 93 Cepeda, San 39 Aaron, Mllw. 81 Aaron, Milw.

"The pension fund will be Mathews, Milw. 22 Freese, Cin. 65 WARSAW UP "Now that I'm less than seven seconds from the world record, I don't think it's beyond me." Thus, former University of Arizona track star George Young optimistically spoke yesterday after the United States track and field meet prepared to return home from a sweep of four dual meets with Russia, Germany, England and Poland.

Young, a first lieutenant in the Army stationed at Fort Lee is aiming at the world steeplechase record of 8:31.2 held by Russia's Gregory Taran. "Setting an American record of 8:38 in Moscow gave me a lot of encouragement," said Young. "Now that I'm less than seven seconds from the world record, I don't think its beyond me." The United States long distance runners long a source of combined amusement and ridicule to the Europeans threatened yesterday to get down to world record clockings in the near future. "They're not laughing at us anymore," said pint-sized Max Truex, acting as spokesman for Young and Jim Beatty. "It used to burn us up1 when they laughed at us.

We never were invited to the European meets because no one thought we were good enough. Jon Douglas, applied experience, a twisting service, and a calculated plan of attack in marching over young Frank Froehling, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 yesterday in the finals of the Pennsylvania Lawn Tennis Championship. The 24-year-old San Diego, marine, assigned here on "temporary additional duty" carried on in leatherneck tradition as he shattered Froehling's dream of becoming the first unseeded player ever to win this annual grass court tournament.

From the first game of the initial set when he broke Froehling's service with sizzling backhand cross-court shot until he ended it an hour and ten minutes later with a backhand placement down the line, Douglas was in complete control of the match. He never trailed as his 19-year-old opponent's bullet service deserted him and the youngster fell apart. Billie Jean Mofitt, top-seeded player from Long Beach, won the women's title Sunday, defeating Justina Bricka, a left-hander from St. Louis, 6-3, 6-4. 1LI HENRY SAYS; With all the dark streets In Tucson, there area will be blacked out of the TV picture in hopes of some of the older players in the pension fund.

Fullmer, who gets $60,000 of the TV money and 40 per cent of the gate will be making his first start since he whipped Sugar Ray Robinson in Las Vegas March 4. In his previous defenses he beat Spider Webb, drew with Joey Giardello, stopped Basilio and took two from Robinson. His career record is 53-4-2 for 59 starts, with 23 knockouts. Fullmer is favored. The match, originally scheduled for July 8, was set back a month because of a cracked knuckle on Fullmer's right hand, now completely recovered.
