Evening News, Port Angeles, Sunday, February 7, 1971 -1 1 JERRY HENDRICKS 452-2253 Chairman P.T.A. MILTON HUNT 457-4233 At Large NEIL PENDLEY 457-7641 Labor JIM JONES 457-4554 CZ Labor GLEN ADOLPHSON 457-3951 Labor People Like You and Me Decide the Future of Our Schools Two years ago a group of people concerned about the educational program in this community met and formed a Citizens Advisory Group to our schools and set up the machinery for a Steering Committee to be the "Watch Dog." The Steering Committee, representing all segments of the community, has been actively involved in School Board Policy decisions; has had observers present during negotiations between the School Board and Teachers' Organizations; has given opinions and ideas; and attempted to reflect the temperament of the community. The Steering Committee has worked cooperatively with the School Board and the Port Angeles Education Association to maintain and improve the educational offerings provided for the youth of our community. The Steering Committee has given the upcoming levy very careful consideration and believes it to be a good tax dollar buy for the citizens of Port Angeles. The Steering Committee endorses this levy.

WHY THE FEBRUARY 9TH SCHOOL LEVY IS NECESSARY Funds available from State sources no longer come even close to supporting the budget required locally for an accredited educational program. The tax reform bill on last fall's ballot failed, and the State has since reduced per-pupil -allocations even below last year's level. The price of school operation continues to increase; books, paper, transportation, utilities all cost more, and all are essential to operation of the schools. Port Angeles schools have long needed improved curriculums, and this levy will provide for positive steps in that direction by adding several courses at the high school level and necessary specially-trained personnel at the elementary level. How Much Will the Levy Cost? 1 1 This is not an additional tax.
