I a a a I a a of B4 THE NEWS JOURNAL SUNDAY, AUGUST 13, 2000 www.delawareonline.com OBITUARIES In Loving Memory of Victor Bartlett Clarke March 15, 1917 to July 27, 2000 Victor, the son of Bertha and Victor Clarke, was born and raised in Wilmington, DE. He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1935 and the Academy of Dramatic. Arts in New York City in 1940. Victor A proudly, 1940 served to in 1946. the He US gradu- Army ated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA and the School for Special Services at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, a VA.

He was honorably discharged having achieved the rank of Captain while serving his country. Upon leaving the military returned to New York to perform on Broadway. His credits included performances in "Annie Get Your "Street "Allegro," and "Love Life." He also made personal appearances on the stages of New York's Roxy and Strand Theatres. In 1949, Victor made his grand operatic debut on the stage of the Teatro Lirico in Milan, Italy after studying with Maestro Ettore Verna. He sang the title role in Verdi's "Otello," "La Forza del Destino" and "I Pagliacci." Among his other roles were Don Jose in "Carmen," Calaf in "Turandot" mes in "Aida." He proceeded to spend the next three years singing and performing, in Italy, Austria, England, South America, Cuba and in the United States, where he was solo tenor with the New York Philharmonic and performed on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera.

In 1957 Vic returned to his beloved Wilmington and established Theatre Arts Studio. Later he took a position as a theatre arts teacher at The Tatnall School. Victor also founded The Lyceum Players, one of Wilmington's most successful theatre groups, which was well known for its productions of Shakespeare at Longwood and dramatic plays such as "Inherit "The Rivalry" and "The Heiress" at Brecks Mill. Their proceeds always went to local charitable organizations. Vic was also a familiar face on and off the stage with The Brandywiners, The Wilmington Opera Society and The Wilmington Drama League.

Victor retired from producing and directing The Lyceum Players in 1976 with his final production of "1776" on the stages of Longwood and the Grand Theatre. He retired as a Master Teacher from The Tatnall School in 1982 after 25 years of teaching theatre, public speaking and English, as well as establishing and producing its annual "Showcase. Victor Clarke left a long legacy of excellence in the performing and never settled for less in himself, his countless students or his incredibly talented performers and production staff. "The Maestro," as he was respectfully titled by Bill Frank, will live on forever in the hearts and memories of those has touched and we are each the richer for those experiences. It is hard to imagine a world without Victor Clarke in it.

He is survived by his sister, Anne Leonard, St. Augustine, FL, his brother, Leonard, Twenty Nine Palms, CA, and his niece, Nicola Aidos Gorce, St. Augustine, FL. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15 at GEBHART FUNERAL HOME at 3401 Philadelphia Pike.

Donahue, Jr. Of Claymont, DE, age 76, died on Wednesday, August 9, 2000 in the Riverside Extended Care Facility, Wilmington. Beloved husband of the late Isabella (McCloskey) Donahue. He was also preceded in death by his brother, John J. Donahue.

Survived by his sisters, Margaret Gallagher Mary C. Donahue, both of Philadelphia, PA. Also survived by his sisterin-law, Betty Donahue; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Donahue was the former owner of Country Maid Dairies.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a WWII Army Air Corps veteran. John O. Erickson, Sr. passed away at age 81 on Thursday, August 10, 2000 at Arbors at New Castle, where he had resided since becoming ill shortly after surgery in of this year. He was born August 1919 in Brooklyn, NY, the first- born son to Swedish immigrants and the first in his family to be a natural born Uniteckstates citizen. Mr.

served in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he worked as a freight conductor and as a passenger conductor on the Pennsylvania Railroad for 37 years until he retired in 1972. He spent his retirement years collecting trains and caring for wife, who has Alzheimer's Disease. He was a Life Member of Atterbury VFW Post John was preceded in death by his third do child, Lorentz, who died in 1945 as an infant; his first wife, Ruth Elizabeth Johnson Erickson, who died in 1965; and his brother, Carl Robert Erickson, who died in 1991. In addition to being survived by his second wife, Eunice Lloyd Erickson, he is also survived by a stepson from his first marriage, Robert Johnson Brockton, MA; his son and daughter John and Alberta Erickson of Newark, DE; his daughter son-in-law, Elizabeth and Hayward Lockaby of Piedmont, SC; his daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Montes Tope of Fort Wayne, IN; daughter and Joanne and Lawrence Green, Sr.

of New Castle, DE; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; as well as a brother, Alfred Erickson of Winchester, VA; and a sister-in-law, Midge Erickson of Rockville, CT. Charles Albert "Lefty" Johnson, Sr. Age 76 of Elsmere, died Friday, August 11,, 2000 in the Christiana Hospital. years at the Wilmington FinishMr. Johnson a worked for 44 ing Co. as a Textile Supervisor, retiring in 1989.

He then worked years at The Devon as a Doorman, where everyone knew him as Charlie. He was a member of Stapler A.A. and enjoyed going to the racetrack and ball games. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen McGonigle Johnson; his children, Margie May, Jeanette Crowley, Charles A. "Chuck" Johnson, Mary Frances Johnson and Bill Johnson, all of Wilmington; 14 grandchildren; 5.

Ms. Johnson was a graduate of Glasgow High School and worked for Country Maid Deli in Brookside Park. She was especially devoted to her loving family, enjoyed going on beach vacations with them, and was active in her sons' sports leagues.

A talented cook, Ms. Johnson was well known by friends and family for her special recipes. She enjoyed craft making as well. She is survived by, her children, Anthony Michael Johnson and Chad Bruce Johnson, both at home; niece, Carla Fritz of Newark; mother, Frannie of Newark; father, John C. Fritz of Ocean City, MD; brother, Mark John Fritz of Newark; and John Preston Zeigler of Havre de Grace, MD.

Kirk Age 93, formerly of Union Park Gardens, died on Thursday, August 10, 2000 in Brandywine Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Kirk retired from Equitable Life Ins. Co. as an insurance agent.

After his retirement, he worked for Knotts, Inc. He was a WWII Army veteran. Mr. Kirk's Dorothy Newcomb Kirk, died in 1991. He is survived by his sisters, Bertha Boronski of Newark and Mary Moroney of West Grove, PA; his nephew and his wife, Gerald and Peggy Newcomb, whom cared for him; and 15 nieces and other nephews.

Services will be on Monday. August 14, 2000 at 9:45 am in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, where friends may call after 9 am. Entombment will be in the adjoining cemetery. "Bud" Murray, who died in 1998 after 56 years of marriage. Mrs. Murray was born and raised in Mt. Airy, MD. She moved to Frederick, MD after graduating from the University of Maryland and her marriage to Bud.

While in Frederick, she was very active in the community including membership and Past President of the Greenwalled Garden Club, where she bea nationally accredited Flower Show Judge and later Life Judge, the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Frederick Civic Club, where she was Chairman of the Decorating Committee for the local Mardi Gras, and was a member of the Evangelical Reformed Church. After moving to Wilmington, DE, she belonged to the Leaf and Petal Garden Club. She was a at Winterthur Museum, worked at the Brandywine River Museum and Hagley Museum. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She is survived by her 2 children, Ross C.

(D'Angelo) Palandrani, age 90 of Lorelton, Wilmington, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, on Wednesday afternoon, August 9, 2000. Jennie was born in Teramo, Italy on February 14, 1910 to the late Salvatore and Giuseppina (Crescenti) D'Angelo, and came to the United States at the age of 2.

A homemaker, enjoyed cooking, knitting, playing cards and, most especially, spending quality time with her family and many friends. Jennie touched many lives, and she will always be lovingly remembered as a caring and devoted wife, mother, mother, sister, augread friend. grandmother, grandhusband of 70 years, James Palandrani, passed away March 23, 2000.
