Expedition to Erebus Cable series may have a familiar look Easy-listening format replaces rock at KQYT i jfi mi tat 71 'Vf-f If I it -1 Radio listeners who mourned the change of format at KJYK have reason to rejoice with the return of the easy-listening format to the Tucson airwaves. FM station KQYT, at 92.1 and 103.9 on the dial, has filled the void left by KJYK, 94.9 when it changed its format late last year.

KQYT changed its format from rock music Jan. 2. "This is not elevator music," said Rich Robbin, KQYT's president and general manager. "It is approximately 65 percent lush instrumental versions of pop songs from the present to 25 years ago, mixed with compatible vocals from the last 25 years. In explaining the switch, Robbin said, "We became aware of not only the void left by KJYK's abandonment of this format, but the tens of thousands of disenfranchised listeners who wanted it back right now." Robbin said the change has elicited a response he has not seen "in my 30 years in the business." Jones cable drops USA Jones Intercable, which serves Pima County residents, has dropped the USA Network from its programming.

The action was taken by the Jones system nationwide, according to Jones representative Kenna Smith. Jones is the 12th-largest cable sys- tern in the country and has more than 800,000 subscribers in 22 states, Smith said. Smith said the reason for dropping USA was twofold. "Currently, Jones is in U.S. District Court with USA, so there is a legal reason," said Smith.

USA's Jim Murray said yesterday from New York that the legal battle stems from the action by some Jones systems to drop USA from their programming during 1988 while, he said, the systems were obligated to carry the network. The second reason the local cable company has dropped USA is that "USA has increased pricing and they're turning around and buying reruns in syndication," Smith said. "Glenn R. Jones (chairman and chief executive officer of the Jones system) sees the future in networks like TNT, which uses its money for original programming." By Jim Radcllffe The Arizona Dally Star Executives of "Hey Dude," a cable-TV series about teen-agers on a dude ranch, expect to begin production in a couple of months in the Tucson area. It would be the first television series primarily shot here since NBC-TV's "Petrocelli," broadcast from 1974 to 1976.

Cinetel Productions of Knoxville, has agreed to produce 13 half-hour shows for Nickelodeon. Options in the contract call for up to 65 shows. In November, Cinetel videotaped a pilot at the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch, and Nickelodeon asked the production company on Monday to produce the first 13 shows. Stephen Land, a Cinetel vice president, said November's shooting in the Tucson area went well and his company would like to return for the series. "We really have no intentions of it being anywhere but Tucson," Land said.

However, Cinetel will not make a firm commitment as to the production details of "Hey Dude" for about a month, he said. Location, casting, writing, format and the budget are concerns that will be addressed by Cinetel executives. Tom Hilderbrand, executive director of the city-run Tucson Film Office, predicted that a 26-show filming schedule would add $3 million to the local economy. Land said that figure seemed to be a reasonable estimate. lM.Vtfc it; Jim Davis, The Arizona Daily Star Cinetel crew and "Hey Dude" cast at the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch In November CD 23 Q-48 Television viewers on Tucson's east, north and northwest sides, in the Casas Adobes and Oro Valley areas and portions of the Catallna Foothills may find Improved reception on these "translator" channels: CQ 7 determine whether Nickelodeon orders more shows, Johnson said.

Nickelodeon based part of its decision to go ahead with the series on responses from 40 children who viewed the pilot in December. "It got tremendous test response," Land said. Cinetel would videotape here in encounters with Mr. Ernst, a nerdy April, May and June and return in ranch owner, the fall if needed.
