Information: 708-636-2600. CARLSON ta. Raymond E. Carlson, late of Dade City, J.un From Tribune Wires ROME Giulietta Masina, who played the haunting waif in "La Strada" and other leading roles in movies directed by her husband, Federico Fellini, died Wednesday. She was 73.

Miss Masina was being treated for lung cancer at the Columbus Clinic, where she had been admitted shortly after the Oct. 31 death of her husband. "She lived her part with incredibleand so unusual today modesty," said actress Sophia Loren. "And when Federico went away, Giulietta found no more reason to continue living." Fellini's nickname for his wife was Lo Spippolo, meaning a small thing that inspires tenderness. The wide-eyed actress appeared in some of Fellini's best-known films, including "Juliet of the Spirits" (1965) and "The Nights of Cabiria" (1956), for which she won the best-actress award at the Cannes Film Festival Her best-known role was as Gel-somina, the ingenuous orphan who became the exploited companion of circus strongman Anthony Quinn in "La Strada" (1954), which won an Oscar as best foreign film.

She returned to the spotlight in 1985 to star with Marcello Mastro-ianni in Fellini's "Ginger and Kenneth Gordon Davies, British scholar of American Revolution Ursolyn D.
