i i i i vv a v' FIRST EDITION Tucson, Friday, February 4, 1994 (Hjf Arizona Bailn Star Page Six Section SEN could find its way back into Tucson market Gabrielson added that if SEN is coming to ports talk show junk-, ies in Tucson are still 'strung out after The basketball coach at the University of Arizona. Holmes will be Darcy's guest on "One-On- One," which will air tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. on KTKT. "We got a lot of calls from people wondering what happened to ('The Press Box')," said Darcy; "We were never going to cancel it. Sports Entertainment Network disappeared from the KTKT (990-AM) airwaves on Monday.

It was a sudden change, one that left loyal and part-time listeners with a major gap in their lives. Morning listeners may have decided to give Rush Limbaugh (KNST-790) or John C. Scott ABC's Wide World of Sports will air the Chrysler Skating Spectacular tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Among those featured will be Scott 1 Davis and Brian Boitano, the top two U.S. men, Dave Eubank SPORTS ON THE AIR "We waited to see the results of the last (ratings) book.

It wasn't performing as we'd hoped." Schavietello added that KTKT will continue its affiliation with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and also provide NASCAR programming, as it did last year. The good news, for SEN fans, is that Tucson might actually see a return of the all-sports network in some capacity. "I think there are stations in the market that are poised to make (SEN) a part of their programming mix," Schavietello said. One SEN official, when contacted yesterday, was coy about which station might be able to incorporate its programming. But he was optimistic that Tucson has not seen the end of SEN.

"I'm not at liberty to announce at this point which station it is," said Chuck Duncan, the network's vice president for affiliate affairs in Chicago. "But it definitely is a high-profile station in the market that would make a great partner." Duncan, who has worked in Tucson for KRQQ and KNST, among others, refused to budge on the Station's identity, despite several attempts that could easily be interpretejl as begs. But he did say the station he was negotiating with was on the AM dial. High profile. AM.

Just how many stations fit that description? KNST and KTUC come to mind. Mike Gabrielson, program director for KTUC, as well as host for "SportsTalk Tucson," said he discussed SEN with presidentgeneral manager Tom Hassey, but both came to the conclusion it was not a good KTUC in any form, he is not aware of it. Bob Lee, operations manager for KNST, had a similar reaction. "It's not us," he said. "I'll take it one step further.

All of our programs are very successful." Lee added that KCEE (940-AM), formerly KWFM, just launched its nostalgia music format, which means it is not about to change any time soon. But isn't it fun to speculate? Maybe Duncan is just blowing smoke in the Tucson market about an SEN return. Maybe his idea of a high-profile AM station is not the same as those in the market. Still, he was convincing. "Hopefully, we'll have this worked out in the next five to seven days," Duncan said.

Fans of SEN, which had minuscule ratings at KTKT, can only hold their collective breath. Devotees of "The Press Box," which airs Saturdays on KTKT, may have noticed the show's absence the past two weeks. Host Pat Darcy said the show was on a brief hiatus because the sponsoring advertising agency "closed its doors." Darcy was speaking of the business that was run by longtime Tucson broadcaster Bernie Perlin, who died in June. Darcy said the show, formerly hosted by Perlin, has found another sponsoring agency (Vision Advertising) and will be heard tomorrow on KTKT at 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Tomorrow's list of commentators, aside from Darcy: Ron Somers and Anthony Gimino from the Star; former UA and pro football player Mike Dawson; and Jerry Holmes, a former assistant and Tonya Harding, Michelle Kwan and Nicole Bobek, the three top female skaters at the U.S. -Championships. Immediately thereafter, she will be a commentator for the network's coverage of the European Figure Skating Championships from 3( Copenhagen, Denmark (2 p.m.). What's up with this? Both are on KNST. Or perhaps longtime KTKT listeners were content with the switch back to CNN Headline News. And a few just might protest the KTKT move by actually listening to music again. Perish the thought. tony Schavietello, KTKT general said the switch from SEN back to CNN Headline News occurred for two reasons: The station felt SEN was not serving its total audience in the best possible way, and the possibility of better ratings and more profits existed with CNN.

"We gave it a year," he said yesterday. "I think it's a good format. In fairness to SEN, I think they've got something there. It just didn't serve the larger share of our community. Murray lays welcome mat for UA's All-Comers meet UA ROUNDUP i r' 'it i iS i By Sean Fitzpatrick The Arizona Daily Star Arizona track and field coach Dave Murray is throwing a party at Drachman Stadium tomorrow, and everyone is invited.

The Wildcats will get their first chance of the season to run, jump and throw at the annual All-Comers Meet. The meet is open to high school, collegiate and open competitors. Central Arizona College will be providing much of the entertainment by sending a "mini-Olympic team" to compete, Murray said. Central's Daniel Effiong was ranked ninth in the world in the 100 meters and sixth in the 200 meters last year. He has run the 100 in 9.98 seconds.

Jamaican Gregory Haughton, also from Central, finished fifth in the World Championships in the 400 meters (44.78). "Their short and long relay teams would be good enough to win the NCAA Championships this year," Murray said. As for the host Wildcats, it will be Murray's chance to see what kind of team he has for the 1994 season. "t'v" "This will be a tuneup to see where we stand before going indoors (next week at NAU)," Murray said. "We already know what the kids we have coming back Can do now we can see what our new people can do." One of Murray's new people, transfer David Loshonkohl from San Diego Mesa Junior College, will be trying to make a good first impression by qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 35-pound weight throw at 10 a.m.

Registration will be at the track tomorrow from 9 to 1 1 a.m. There is a $3 entry fee per person for an unlimited number of events. For more information, contact the track and field office at 621-6719. Three Wildcats won't be able to participate in the meet, however. (AP) -Former President Bush and comedian Bill Murray both went into the gallery on the first hole they played yesterday in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Bush did it by accident, hitting his second shot into the huge crowd lining the fairway. A spectator was clipped but unhurt by a glancing blow.

Whether Murray's journey outside the ropes was an accident remains to be determined. In any event, the comedian, completely unabashed by some criticism from golfs hierarchy, continued to take his act into the gallery and roll around on the ground. Murray and Bush played at Spyglass Hill, the most difficult of the three Monterey Peninsula courses used for this unique event. That's also where Arnold Palmer played as a member of the Bush foursome. Palmer shot fi9 and was within four strokes of the lead and, along with the former president, drew most of the gallery.

"It. was the first time he's been exposed to this kind of competition, and it was something of a shock to him," Palmer said. Despite some ground balls and shots into the crowd, Bush helped partner Hale Irwin by four shots, but they were in the lower quarter of the 180 teams composed of a pro and an amateur. In the individual pro competition, Dudley Hart, playing in the last group on the course at Poppy Hills, took the lead with an eagle on the final hole for a 7-un-der-par 65. Murray, playing with Scott Simpson, created something of a controversy last year when he went into the gallery, led an elderly woman into a sand trap, then spun her off her feet.

PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman said Murray's actions were "inappropriate and detrimental and will not be tolerated in the future." On the first tee at Spyglass, however, Murray again went into the gallery, fell over a seated woman spectator and knocked suffered an upper-arm break. Olerud, who hit .363 last season with 24 homers and 107 RBIs, agreed to a $17 million, three-year contract.

The deal has an option for 1997 that, if exercised, would give the first baseman $22.5 million over four years. The deal's annual average value of $5,666,667 is the 15th-highest in the major leagues. With the start of spring training two weeks away, Charlton signed with Philadelphia, Reed signed with Milwaukee, and Cotto signed with Baltimore.
