Wheel of Fortune New ownership predicts changes, profitability for KDTU-TV By Jim Radcliffe The Arizona Dally Star Clear Channel Television President Dan Sullivan, who was in Tucson to help with the transition, predicts several changes at his company's newest station, KDTU-TV, including immediate profitability. I Making money was something the Koman Catholic Diocese of Tucson tiever accomplished with KDTU, )Channel 18, which the diocese put on pw-ww "i IV I aiitW in I i I jl fl I i iVf vat I i 'i i j9 I 1 i Ir i rntiZim i i Jft ffnwjp -mlilt i ft' r-" m' it U-UXJOEL i mf ri a half-hour serial. Sullivan also said there will probably be some schedule shuffling by April.

Because Tucson viewers associate the KDTU call letters with the diocese, Clear Channel will apply to the Federal Communications Commission for new ones. On Feb. 15, Mark Jollie, the general manager at KWKT-TV in Waco, Texas, fwill assume the same positioner. KDTU. He will replace Robert Nordmeyer, who held the position the entire time the diocese owned the station.

The station will take a more active role in the community, Sullivan says, and someday may even offer Tucsonans a locally produced news team. "Uncle" Bob Love, who hosts an afternoon children's variety show, may get his viewers to help with community projects, Sullivan says. "We have this army of kids who we feel can bring something to the community. And, by the way, have fun." originally cost the diocese $3.5 million and might be worth twice that, Sullivan says. An option for Clear Channel, he adds, would be to sell the expansive building at 1855 N.

Sixth Ave. and build a smaller one. Besides getting the station at a bargain price, Sullivan says there are other ways to save money: possibly reducing the 40-member staff by "a few," and using the well-equipped KDTU building for production work by other Clear Channel stations. There will be on-air changes, too, Sullivan says. "The station will have a new look.

I think you will like the look of it." Clear Channel has negotiated for additional programming, including movies with more violence and sexual overtones than the diocese wanted on KDTU: for example, "Marathon Man," "Throw Momma from the Train," "Dressed to Kill" and "Anatomy of a Seduction." "Tiny Tunes," a Steven Spielberg project with Looney Tunes characters as youngsters, will air in 1990 as i the air Dec. 31, 1984. In fact, the diocese sold the station to Clear Channel Television the transfer of ownership was official Wednesday because the commercial sta-j tion had drained its finances. Clear Channel will instantly make money, Sullivan says, because the Houston-based company received 1 such a good deal from the diocese, But in late October when the diocese announced that the station would go off the. air to save money by then the price had dropped Clear Channel agreed to help with the bills for two months to keep KDTU on the air while negotiations took place, Sullivan says.

When the initial agreement was announced on Nov. 3, the parties said Clear Channel would pay $2.5 million in cash and assume up to $6 million of KDTU's contracts. Sullivan says the final accord called for $2.25 million in cash, and negotiations with distributors whom he offered up-front cash have so far pared contract obligations to under $4 million. KDTU is Clear Channel's second station it also owns WPMI-TV in the Mobile, area but plans call for several more acquisitions within the year. Clear Channel Television is a subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications, which owns 16 radio stations.

KDTU's facility and equipment much of which is state of the art Channel 64 to shut down 3V2 hours to boost signal Channel 64, which carries the signal of Channel 4, KVOA-TV, to the north and northwest sides, will be shut down from 8:30 a.m. today to about noon. Channel 4 programming director David Hatfield said that when the translator channel is put back into operation it will have a signal six times as powerful as the one previously. Hatfield said the shutdown would affect the Catalina Foothills, Oro Valley and the Casas Adobes areas. Cable subscribers will not be which had wanted to sell the station for a couple of years.

Sullivan says the diocese offered to sell KDTU about nine months ago for $6 million if the buyer also assumed $6 million in contracts with film and serial distributors; he was not interested. Despite all the up-to-date paraphernalia, we've seen this sort of series (which was concocted by David J. Burke and Stephen Kronish) By Walter Goodman 1989 The New York Times In case anybody was wondering, "Unsub," the uneuphonious title of an hour-long crime series that starts tonight at 9 on Channel 4 is short for "unknown subject." The unsub in question this week is a serial killer whose behavior invites the skills of the Behavioral Science Lab, a super-special unit of the Justice Department (it says in the program notes) that is ready to travel from Washington to wherever murder strikes.

The high-tech team is led by David Soul and and includes M. Emmet Walsh, Kent McCord and several others, most of whom speak medical, psychological and electronic jargon as they hone in on the "victimology" of the case. The director of the first show, Stephen J. Cannell who is also the executive producer of the NBC series moves matters along briskly. lne sleuths put on lab coats and goggles and try to figure out, with the help of computers and spectrometers, smart guesswork and dumb luck, why the killer picks on young women and does his dirty deeds on Fridays and particularly what hap Channels 23, 27, 48 and 64 are on the UHF dial.
