Knapp completed 35 of 48 with one interception for the Dukes (4-2).

Bruce Hocker had 18 receptions for 125 yards and one touchdown. John Skelton connected on 11 of 21 for 160 yards with one interception and a touchdown for Fordham (1-4). Michael Clukey's 20-yard field goal with 9:23 left in the second quarter put the Rams up 3-0. Knapp's 11-yard pass to Dan Spriggs late in the third quarter gave Duquesne a 6-3 advantage. Fordham took its last lead, 10-6, on Skelton's 26-yard pass to Richard Rayborn early in the fourth quarter.

Knapp then combined with John Bunevich on a 7-yard touchdown pass and with Hooker on a 16-yard touchdown for a 20-10 lead. Joe Prydatko scored for the Rams on a 1-yard run with 55 seconds left. Columbia 24, lona 0: At New York, Craig Hormann threw for 215 yards and a touchdown as Columbia won the first meeting between the schools. Columbia (3-1) managed 298 yards in total offense against the Gaels (1-5), who came into the game leading Division I-AA in total defense. Hormann completed 22 of 37 for Columbia, which earned its first shutout since a 24-0 win over Harvard in 1998.

Iona's Michael Biehl was 17 of 28 for 155 yards, replacing Gaels' starter Dustin Croick, who missed the game with a leg injury. Hormann threw a 1-yard pass to Austin Knowl-in with 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter to cap a 72-yard drive and give the Lions a 7-0 lead. Jon Rocholl kicked a 42-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to extend the lead to 10-0. Columbia converted two turnovers into second-half touchdowns. Iona played without coach Fred Mariani, who was hospitalized after becoming ill during practice Friday.

Defensive coordinator Ed Lynett handled the coaching duties. Army piles up points vs. VMI Black Knights hang 62 on Keydets week after blowout loss to Rice Roderick Boone The Journal News WEST POINT If ever there was a need for a game like this, it was yesterday. Army was befuddled by last week's effort in its 34-point loss to Rice, a team that seemed like it forgot how to win, having dropped 20 of its previous 21 contests. And with upcoming games against teams like Notre Dame, TCU and UConn, plus the annual rivalry matchups with Air Force and Navy still on the horizon, the Black Knights needed something positive and someone to beat up on.

Enter VMI. Thank you, schedule maker. The Black Knights pounced on the Keydets like they had been caged up all week, just waiting for someone to open the door and let them out Army reeled off 31 consecutive points to start the game and was never in trouble, pummeling Division I-AA VMI 62-7 before a sun-splashed homecoming-day crowd of 31,069 at Michie Stadium. "I definitely think that everybody took that sour taste they had last week and turned it into motivation," junior wide receiver Jeremy Trimble said. "We got back to the basics and fundamentals.

We focused on one play at a time and we all wanted to come out here and show our fans how the real Jim McKnightThe Associated Press Army's John Wright, left, reaches out to help the Black Knights recover a fumble by VMI in the second quarter yesterday. ly well." In a start contrast to last week, the Black Knights found themselves on the right end of a commanding half-time cushion. They were up 34-7 and had tilings on cruise control. That allowed Army to exhale somewhat. Roughly 100 of the 103 players who dressed saw action.

But the Black Knights know things will be different Saturday against UConn, which seems to have Army's number. "We are going to come out," junior quarterback David Pevoto said, "and play as hard as we can next week." Reach Roderick Boone at rodboonelohud.com or 914-696-8531. Army team plays." Led by Trimble's two touchdowns, six players found the end zone in one of the best offensive showings in Army's history. The last time the Black Knights (3-3) put on this type of display was in 1958, when they posted 68 points in a 62-point pasting of Colgate. Suffice to say, it's been a long time coming.

Still, Bobby Ross was a little torn about it since he graduated from VMI in 1959. "It's nice to get that, but at the same time I've got some mixed feelings on that honestly," the Army coach said. "It's nice to get the points, but the biggest thing is our kids were really excited and actually playing very well." Army entered its matchup with the Keydets (1-5) ranked 112th out of 119 Division I teams in the turnover-margin department but found a way to improve on that number immediately. Barrett Scruggs forced a fumble on the game's second play from scrimmage. Charl Rockwood gobbled it up at VMI's 25-yard line, and it took just one play for the Black Knights to capitalize.

Wesley McMahand ran it in untouched for the score, and Army achieved one of its goals a mere 1:01 into the game: get off to a fast start against a team it should beat. "It set the tone for the entire defense for the entire day," Scruggs said. "We forced three fumbles and did some things well on defense. The game plan against the option worked really, real AREA COLLEGE ROUNDUP v. Chappas cannot save St.
