Television www.thejournalnews.com 8E Saturday, February 3, 2001 The Journal News A MOVIES BEST BETS PROGRAMS BEST BETS All the right moves DAYTIME TALK In the morning "Today" (7 a.m.,NBC) Wedding plans; author Tavis Smily; 1 I .,) i 7 Pit lar slot on ABC any longer, it returns with this special edition. Weddings are the focus of the fun, since the hour compiles footage of amusing errors that have occurred at nuptials, whether at the actual ceremony or the reception that followed. Expect to see disasters involving gowns, cakes and the first dances shared by newlyweds. "Walker, Texas Ranger" (9 p.m., CBS). Wrestling icon turned actor Hulk Hogan has a major guest role in this new episode.

He plays a friend of Walker (Chuck Norris), who enlists him to stop two warring gangs from battling further. The apparent solution is a nighttime basketball league intended to keep the gang members off the streets. "The District" (10 p.m., CBS). An unknown individual has turned vigilante and is targeting child molesters in this new episode. An undercover detective (Erik King) is assigned to find the perpetrator, who is getting all the information he needs on his targets from an Internet site.

"Boxing" (11p.m., HBO). It's a family affair of sorts as the "KO Nation" series moves to a new, late-night slot with this card from Miami. The main event pits Hector Camacho Jr. against Rocky Martinez in a junior-welterweight bout, while ex-world champ Hector Camacho Sr. takes on Troy Lowry in a middleweight battle.

Fran Charles and Kevin Kelley serve as "Dances With Wolves" (8 p.m., UPN). Kevin Costner attained superstardom as the director and principal performer of this 1990 Oscar-winner for Best Picture. It's the truly epic story of a Civil War officer who becomes involved with a Sioux Indian tribe, to the point of renouncing his own heritage. Mary McDonnell and Graham Greene also appear, and this edition includes footage not seen in the theatrical version. "Switchback" (8 p.m., MAX).

The hunt becomes intensely personal for an FBI agent (Dennis Quaid) trying to find a serial killer in this 1997 suspense tale. The lawman's son is kidnapped by the murderer, whose identity is unclear for a while. Danny Glover plays the primary suspect in the slayings, and Quaid races time to determine if he's the guilty party. "My Best Friend's Wedding" (9 p.m., ABC). Julia Roberts reclaimed her romantic-comedy crown with director PJ.

Hogan's engaging 1997 tale. She plays a woman who panics, then begins scheming, when her supposedly pla-tonic pal (Dermot Mulroney) announces his plans to marry a seemingly ideal woman (Cameron Diaz). Co-star Rupert Everett truly steals the show as a gay acquaintance who assists Roberts. "Drowning Mona" (8 p.m., STARZ). The demise of a much-hated resident (portrayed by a shrewish Bette Midler) of a town yields many suspects in her death Gregory Hines taps into the life of Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson Bridget Byrne The Associated Press Great dancer portrays great dancer.

Sounds easy. But it took more than just natural ability and agility for tap star Gregory Hines to play tap legend Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. He had to move in a whole new direction. "I discovered that he was left-footed and that he would start all of his steps on the left side. And I'm right-footed," says Hines, who recreates Robinson's routines in the Showtime movie "Bojangles," premiering Sunday (8 p.m.).

Robinson, who died in 1949 at age 71, is probably best remembered partnered with tiny Shirley Temple in such 1930s movies as "The Little Colonel." He had escaped the confines of "blackface" vaudeville to become the highest-paid black performer of his era. One of his famous routines was a stair dance which Hines faithfully recreates and also reprises at the end of the movie in split screen alongside old footage of Robinson's performance. "I wanted people to see Bill at the end and see him dancing, and I also felt Bill was competitive enough and egotistical enough where he would be happy that at the end of the film they got to see him," Hines says. Robinson's driving ambition, his gambling, his mistreatment of the women in his life, his problems with Hollywood stereotyping are all depicted. cal role were easier to cope with than others. Normally lithe, Hines indulged in the luxury of eating ice cream and cookies and "pasta at 10 o'clock at night" to gain some weight and appear more like the chunkier Robinson. Although accustomed to metal taps, he "liked the consistency of the sound between toe and heel" of the wooden taps "Bojangles" wore. What Hines didn't like was having to put on Robinson's stereotypical facial expression. "His style smiling and the eyes wide open that was the toughest thing to do," says Hines, whose natural demeanor, though not at all somber, is sleepy-eyed, easy elegance.

The modern sophisticate pauses to mug the old-fashioned minstrel look. "In a way the smile was almost like a grimace. Oooh, that was painful." Hines admits that his generation of blacks railed against Robinson's smiling stage persona. He grew up preferring the style of dancers like the Nicholas Brothers and John Bubbles "down on the floor instead of up on the toes." But later the complexity of Robinson's personal odyssey drew his admiration. "He's really became a true hero for me and I can't look at footage of him now without getting very emotional," says Hines.

Former NFL star Drew Pearson, vice president of the XFL's New York-New Jersey Hitmen, displays the helmet of his team which will compete in the league's first televised contest against the Las Vegas Outlaws tonight on NBC. "That's Life" (8 p.m., CBS). To meet a requirement for her sociology class, Lydia (Heather Paige Kent) becomes a day-care volunteer in this new episode. She comes to enjoy her non-paying job there, then tries to determine how she can continue it and also solve her money problems. "XFL Football" (8 p.m., NBC).

NBC begins televising games in this league, which is a co-venture of NBC Sports and World Wrestling Federation founder Vince McMahon, as Saturday offerings for the next 12 weeks. The championship game on April 12 will earn the winning team $1 million. The first contest pits the New YorkNew Jersey Hitmen against the Las Vegas Outlaws, and Jesse Ventura and Matt Vasgersian handle the commentary. "America's Funniest Home Videos: Matrimony Mania" (8 p.m., ABC). Though the series doesn't have a regu Isaiah Washington and Nicole An Parker play TV industry employees who have a romance while handling a hit series in "Dancing in September." in this dark 2000 comedy.

Danny DeVito plays the police chief, who has a hard time determining which individual disliked the woman enough to actually do her in. "The Devil's Advocate" (8 p.m., TNT). Director Taylor Hackford's seriocomic 1997 tale stars Keanu Reeves as an idealistic young attorney. His impressive record earns him a job with a prestigious New York City firm, but he's ultimately dismayed to learn that his charismatic boss (an enjoy-ably over-the-top Al Pacino) is really the devil. "Dancing In September" (9 p.m., HBO).

Written and directed by Reggie Rock Bythewood, this new drama concerns black television executives and the sacrifices they make to have a hit show. Nicole Ari Parker plays a writer who falls for a programming chief (Isaiah Washington) while pitching a series that makes the fall lineup. Once it becomes successful, compromises are forced.
