Tribute to Vin Scully Continued from Page SI yean, near misses. World Series wins and losses and second division squalor. With Scully, baseball always seemed raucn more tnan just a game of outs, runs and innings. He presented a full-scale perspective literate, al ways objective, knowledgeable of the game precision and pace, with an extraordinary eye for the surround NOW APPEARING FROM HAWAII TME ALOIS ing elements of the action taking place on the field. During a lull, Scully might go off on a whimsical, impromptu tangent he once urged a Dodger crowd to sing happy birthday to umpire Frank Secory.

Indeed, there was something more to life than the game of baseball. Scully's anecdotes, not always related to the game, embellished the inevitable pauses of baseball. He delivered statistics in a way that made you feel they really meant something. He even performed the necessary duties of selling Dodgers tickets and Danny Goodman souvenirs without making one feel as though there was a gun at his back. Come on out and enjoy it the Big Red machine, the Phillies with Mike Schmidt Enjoy it Scully would never hesitate to admire an opposing player or performance.

And if the Dodgers were flat, Scully would say so. Perhaps it partially explains the curious scene at Dodger Stadium, where thousands of fans, with radios of all descriptions attached to them like plastic appendages, listen intently to Scully's description of the same game they're watching. It is as if there were a need for corroboration of the obvious.
