STOPPEO-Oregon State quarterback Scott Richardson is stopped for no gain by Trojans' Eric Williams (top) and Garry Cobb during Saturday's game in Coliseum won by USC, 56-0. Times photo by Kobcrl Lachmnn Stained Glass Has Struggle but Wins BY BION ABBOTT Tlmii Statl Writer Stained Glass, a red hot Derby prospect before injuries put him out of action at the end of February, finally got his first chance to run around two turns which he handled with enough dispatch to win the $32,300 Alibhai Handicap Saturday before 25,516 fans at Santa Anita. It was a difficult trip, however, and jockey Darrel McHargue had all he could do to get Stained Glass to the front in the final few strides. He beat fast-finishing Misty Stone by a head, with the pacesetter, Restless Heritage, only a neck farther back in third. Stained Glass, carrying high weight of 122 pounds, completed the 1 116 miles in 1:42 25 over a track that was hard but slightly off from 1.18 inches of rain the night before. It took the stewards nearly four times that long to decide that two claims of foul which followed the race had no merit. First, jockey Frank Olivares, who rode Misty Stone, lodged a protest against the winner. Then the trainer of fourth-place Classy Surgeon, Tom Blincoe, claimed a foul against Misty Stone. Stained Glass, a 3-year-old son of Olympiad King trained by Joe Manzi, won four stakes as a juvenile. He paid $4.20 Saturday while earning $18,800 for actor Rod Stcigcr and Recva Grown, owner of a Burbank restaurant. Jockey Uiffit Pincay wound up fifth with the 17-10 second choice Wood Green, but otherwise enjoyed his second best day of the season with four winners. He scored with Amathca ($6.60), Ruby E. ($3.80), Solarizer ($11.20) and Yew Haw Junction ($10.80). Only Ruby E. was a betting favorite. Hoofbcais Trainer Charlie Whltllnghant hardly needs a benefit race to be staged on his behalf, but that is what today's $100,000 Oak Tree Invitational has become . . . Whittingham-lrained horses have won this weight-for-age race at 1 miles on the grass course five limes out of seven, and his three-horse entry of King Pcllinorc, Dahlia and Royal Derby II will be heavily favored to give him a sixth victory today ... In 1970 the Whittingham cavalry staged a onc-two-thrcc sweep with Daryl's Joy, Fiddle Isle and Cougar II . . . The two times Whitlingham failed to win, he was second with Fiddle Isle in 1969 and second with Groshawk in 1973 ... In summary, Whitlingham has started 17 horses in the Oak Tree Invitational and collected 13 checks with them for a total of $409,100 in purse money.
