TODAY'S FM HIGHLIGHTS Newman, peering at the microphone like a cat at a mousehole, softly crooned his new song, "Love Story," hardly helping it, and Jimrtry Webb, gleefully pounding the piano, offered his latest, "Careless We'd," which will make nobody forget "Little Green Apples." More Conventional Liza sang a more conventional new Kander-Webb song written for her, "Maybe This Time," planting her feet apart, throwing out her pelvis, and giving it everything.

The girl can sing. Make no mistake about that. But the special could have done better by her. The commercials, mostly involved with the anti-Utter campaign, were beautifully made individual experiences which the show seemed to interrupt. If I were Liza Minnelli, I might have been tempted to sue my sponsor.

The commercials -with which the Glass Containers Manufacturers Institute festooned the special "Liza" on NBC Monday night were better than the show in concept, inventiveness and visual effectiveness. I do not mean to put down Miss Minnelli, who is an astonishingly versatile talent, but her special, produced and directed by Steve Binder and written by lyricist Fred Ebb, seemed to me to belabor the obvious. It was another one of those genuflections to show business which are really quite tiresome, embellishing the theme of Liza carrying on the tradition of her parents, the late Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli. Broadway Hits A number called "The 11 O'Clock Song" gave Liza a cue to sing a lot of Broadway show-stoppers; there was a vaudeville sequence involving Anthony New-ley doing a "Very Soft Shoe," and a movie number inspired by the recent auction of old props at MGM, in which Michael Pollard, impishly out of place, joined Liisa and Newley. There was also a sequence that looked like a fallout from another show in which myopic Randy WIPES AWAY BLOTCHES AND BLEMISHES 3:00 KFAC (92.3) Stereo Omnibus.
