OHIO 'Love in E-Flat 9 like a TV sit-com ByDAVlDCONNELLY "Love in E-Flat," playing through Sunday at the Canal Fulton Dinner Theatre, is flat indeed. Starring Michael Cole of "Mod Squad" fame and produced by David Fulford, the play is nothing more than the worst TV situation comedy transferred to the stage. The performers are saddled with an absurd script by Norman Krasna. Howard (Cole) is a brilliant young intern who lives next door to his Amy (VicKi Kay wood). Theirs is a supposedly liberated rela- tionshipwith no strings attached.

Of course all of this is a facade. Amy really is out to get her man even though she describes herself as "a free and independent modern woman who couldn't be happier." To which older, interfering, sister Bea (Kerry Michaels) responds, "And you're thinking of killing yourself!" Unfortunately, this is typical of the dialogue. THINKING THEIR relationship is one of total trust, poor Amy is shocked when Mr. Cooper (Chuck Healy), a bugging expert, discovers a bug in her very own apartment. Cooper originally was contracted by Stanley (Adam Gregor), Bea's husband, to uncover any wiretaps in his construction offices.

MICHAELCOLE To borrow funds CARROLLTON Council Tuesday night, in a special meeting called by Harold Laizure, council president, and Mayor Lynn Fox, passed a resolution to borrow for the Mace rd. improvement project. The resolution, which was passed unanimously in the 15-minute session, states that the money borrowed from such lending institutions as council chooses will be put in escrow until needed for the sanitary sewer and road improvement project. Library hours changed GNADENHUTTEN A change in hours has been announced for the public library here. In the future, the library will be open Wednesdays from 1 to 4 and 6 to It will be closed all day on Thursdays.

Dance sel Saturday UHRICHSVILLE The Star Pro- menaders Modern Western Square Dance Club will hold a dance Saturday from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Trenton Avenue School. Dick Moats will be caller Church Calendar) WilliBg Workers Class. Dover South Moravian Church. 7:30 p.m., Christian education building.

To Amy's surprise, Howard has been listening to her conversations with other men. Consistent with the worst TV farce, she responds in kind by showering her attention on another man and intimating that she is pregnant. Howard hears all this, of course, and becomes frantic. He wants to do the right thing danced and now it's time to pay the but Amy resists a little bit longer. He is supported through the ordeal by his roommate Mitchell (Russ Hubert), another intern, and predictably the lovers are reunited at the end with a kiss.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE cast does not rise above this horrid script. Through exaggerated and stereotypic performances, they contribute more than their share to the silliness. Only one performer, Canton radio personality Chuck Healy, is comfortably funny. Healy has no better lines than the rest, but he almost makes them work through comic understatement. But his appearance is a brief one.

Kaywood and Hubert take the bogus awards. Kaywood is the breathless Hollywood starlet type, a mannequin who Hubert does so much jumping and body-twitching on the set that he smacks of a physical disturbance. Cole, however, deserves a better script. His very adaptability to comedy is highly questionable. An actor with a fine dramatic voice and an intensity of expression, he comes alive briefly when he and Kaywood almost part.

On the technical end, producer Fulford failed in timing sound effects and blocking. Cole shut off the receiver on a set a number of times while static continued to play off-stage. Roommate Hubert had a bad habit in the second act of blocking Cole completely from the audience's view. Area audiences deserve more from a professional cast. All "Love in E-Flat" needs is a laugh track, periodic commercials and a "Love American Style" theme song.
