From Times Stall Writer SPOKANE Rufus Cunningham is a 5-11, 170-pound free safety. And. as a relatively small man in a big man's game, he doesnt underestimate the importance of size. That's why the Washington State defensive back believes that USC wai beat UCLA in late November. "UCLA's backs are good but they're too small," Cunningham said after the Bruins beat his Cougars.

WSU has played USC and UCLA back to back losing 28-10 to the Trojans in the Coliseum. UCLA quarterback John Sciarra identified Cunningham as one of talk-' ative Cougars who baited him at the start of the game. the agile. 230-pound CLINCHES CUP ROUND TUCSON 151 The United States clinched the second round of the 1976 American Zone Davis Cup cornpetition Saturday when Dick Stockton and Erik van Dillen thrashed Venezuelans Humphrey Hose and Jorge Andrew. 6-2. 6-2. 7-5.

The Americans needed only 6S minutes for their doubles victory and an unbeatable 3-0 lead over Venezuela.in the best-of-five series. Jimmy Connors and Roscoe Tanner gave the United States a 2-0 lead in singles matches on Friday. Two more singles matches are scheduled for today. With Stockton serving the opening game, he and Van Dillen needed less than. three minutes for a love game which set the tone for the Americans' torrid afternoon before some 6.200 fans.

Both teams held service until the Americans broke through Hose in the sixth game of the first set Hose was the victim of a breakthrough in the second game of the second set but the Venezuelans promptly broke back on Van Dillen. The deciding point may. have been a brisk wind from the comer of the court that-held Hose's return from going out after Stockton had yelled to his partner to "let it go." The United States promptly took the lead again on Andrew's sen-ice and quickly closed cut the set The score did not go to deuce until the first game of the third set Venezuela made it tougher for the Americans in the final set In the final game. Van Dillen tapped a soft shot that almost came to a stop on the top of the net and then trickled down for the point that gave the advantage' to the United States. The next exchange on Andrewrs serve brought home the victory- The U5.

After Mullennix intercepted a Sciarra pass that bounced off tijjht end Don Pederson's hands.

Thompson took the Cougars in from 55 yards out He got the touchdown on a 2-yard keeper. If the Cougars had any hopes of getting back in the game at 16-7. Sciarra quickly dispelled them. The quarterback swept to his left got a tremendous block from Avers that enabled him to cut upfield and kept his feet until downed at the WSU 6-vard line Sciarra broke a couple of tackles on the graceful run. Ayers got the touchdown from the 2 his third and UCLA was breezing with a 23-7 lead.

It became 30-7 on Sciarra's 12-yard touchdown pass to Pcderson at the outset of the fourth quarter. And. after WSU scored (30-15). Dankworth got his first opportunity this season for some extended playing time. Continued from First Page inside.

When we adjusted for that they killed us outside." Washington State linebacker Scott Mullennix just shook his head when asked what he thought of Sciarra-: "I knew he was good," he said, "but I had no idea he was that good." Sciarra is playing on a tender left ankle There are bone chips in it and he said he might have an operation after the season. And he was wincing when trainer Ducky Drake stripped tape off the sore ankle. "Sure it hurts but I can play on it" Sciarra said. "I was a little amazed that we were able to move so well on another veer team. "But we run out of so many different formations that it's difficult to defense them all" The Cougars probably arent in the Bruins' class but they might have made more of a game of it if it hadnt been for injuries.

John Hopkins, the starting quarterback, was knocked out of the game on the first scries. The former Pius prep star suffered badly bruised ribs. The Cougars also lost fullback Vcm Chamberlain with strained knee ligaments and they were short of experienced linebackers because of injuries. Sophomore Jack Thompson, who hasnt seen much action this season, replaced Hopkins. Thompson, of Samoan descent is a cousin of Pete Pele.

UCLA's defensive tackle. Thompson had difficulty sustaining drives but this was mainly due to an nose guard had another big game and was supported by linebackers Terry Tautoto. Raymond Burks and Frank Sfephens and freshman Manu Tuiasosopo, making his first start as a defensive tackle. The UCLA secondary didnt get an interception although Oscar Edwards. Pat Schmidt Harold Hardin and Barney Person were just a split second away from picking off several of Thompson's passes.

Washington State finished with 409 total yards (UCLA had 521) but a lot of that yardage came in the last eight minutes when the outcome had already been determined. UCLA is now executing Vermeils veer more proficiently than at any time in the past two years. "Our players could coach the offense themselves." Vermeil said, "because they have so much confidence and understanding of what we're trying to do." The Bruins had poor field position at the outset of the game and were surprised by a blitzing and talkative WSU defense. Sciarra said many of the Cougars needled him obscenities. But UCLA got untracked late in the first quarter, driving S3 yards to Ayers" first touchdown, a tackle-breaking 5-yard thrust up the middle.

There was no conversion attempt because Dankworth juggled the snap but a 6-0 lead was soon expanded to 9-0 on Brett White's 22-yard field goal Then Ayers. on third and 2. found daylight inside and was alone on the WSU 45 on his way to his 54-yard touchdown.
