He received credits on 14 feature films. In 1949 he Joined the Production Code Administration, pre decessor of the Rating Board. Fischer-Dieskau Triumph to the shattering "Abschied." Toward the end, Fischer-Dieskau began to show some justifiable signs of strain at range extremes, and he missed the mark by a hair in a few exposed intervals.

In context it couldn't have mattered less. In two hours he had made more beautiful music than some singers manage in a whole season. Or a lifetime. Albert E. Van -Schmus will become, acting director of the MPAA Rating Board in Hollywood on Monday, succeeding Dr.

Aaron Stern, who -has resigned to join Columbia Pictures Industries. The changes were announced by Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Assn. of America, which supervised the day to day operations of the film industry's voluntary system. OPENS MAY 21 BY MARTIN BERNHEIMER Ttmts Music Critic Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau demonstrated revelations 'Tuesday night. He somehow managed to transform the Dorothy Chandler Tavilion into an intimate salon. With taste, musicality and poetry not to mention vocal freshness he proved that a quarter century of public singing has taken virtually no toll in his communicative powers. In a discerning, ambitious, wide-ranging program devoted exclusively to Franz Schubert, he uncovered subtleties and nuances that might have come as a surprise even to the composer. Accompanied with remarkable sensitivity by Karl Engcl at the piano, he reminded us that enlightened lied interpretation must repeat, must at all times be a partnership between equals.

Frofound Stimulation He provided profound stimulation and pleasure throughout. His greatest demonstration of artistry, however, came at the very end: in the seventh and final encore. By this time, the casual concertgoers had Fischer-Dieskau obviously was singing for the faithful cognoscenti. He chose "Abschied," from the "Schwanengesang." It is a wonderful song, a song of farewell: initially a farewell to a cheerful and lively town. The audience understood the message.

Laughter greeted the first word, "Ade." It was a good joke, embraced amiably on both sides of the footlights. There was a certain danger in the jovial atmosphere, however, because each successive strophe brings with it a crucial darkening in mood. The protagonist is galloping away for a reason. The town has brought him sadness. The romantic rider, FOR TICKET GROUP SALES INFORMATION CALL (213) 553-3000 Tues.

An ordinary artist might never have been able to realize the poignancc of the song after the jolt of that rollicking start. Fischer-Dieskau needed only the hush of a silken pianissimo in the second stanza, sudden gravity of gaze and intensity of expression, to re-establish, instantly, the essential tone. At the end, he had the audience closer to tears than laughter. It was masterful. But so many things were masterful at this poised and dreamy revery of "Ihr Bild," the airy charm of "Das Fisch-ermaedchen," the restrained legato of "Am Mecr." the bitter gloom of Memorable Studies In the less familiar middle group, the baritone offered exceptionally memorable studies in dynamic shading dramatic simplicity and feathery phrasing Fischer-Dieskau flirted with trouble only in heavyweight, declamatory songs such as "Der Atlas' Staples, Four Tops to Open 5-Day Stand The Staple Singers and the Four Tops open a five-day stand Sunday night in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton.
