Junior center Steve Jaster (6-2) and guard Grant Galyardt (6-2) round out the starting five. Torrance and Mor-ningside are currently tied for the Sky League lead with 5-1 records. On this pace, both will make the Southern Section playoffs starting Tuesday, Feb. 28, as the top two teams in each league gain a berth. Boerger looks for a "darkhorse" to sneak through and win the playoffs.

Will Boerger, basketball coach at Torrance High, thinks it can and i3 out to prove it. As far as Boerger is concerned, the season started last Friday after his club whipped Sky League leading Morn-ingside, 72-64, for its 17th win. In terms of talent, Torrance i3 loaded. Boerger has practically the same team that fi- PREP PATTER nished third in the massive Southern Section last year, Including forward Bart Johnson, one of the most sought-after preps in the Southland. Yet, the Tartars struggled to play .500 ball the first half of the season.

Why? "We were playing as individuals, instead of as a team," Boerger explains. "I'm discouraged about our start, certainly, but I would rather not reflect on past problems. Now, I think we are mentally oriented to do the job in the home stretch. "I think Friday's game was the turning point of the season for us. The game showed the boys we have the stuff if we pull together as a team.

We're a coming ball club that has finally found itself." If it is true that Torrance has "found itself," the top teams in the CIF are in for some trouble. The Tartars have three starters off the club that lost only to Southern Section -champion Sierra in the 1965-66 semifinals. College Prospect Johnson, a slim 6-514 sharpshooter, has had college scouts drooling for three years. Boerger calls him the greatest offensive player he has had in 15 years of coaching. "Every time Johnson gets the ball something happens he either gets one, two or three points," Boerger praises.

"He is a spectacular player. Bart shoots well from all over and is also our key re-bounder. Against Mor-ningside, he had only 16 points, but made 17 re America's Largest Tax Service BOTH FEDERAL Jf! If they get into foul trouble they've got problems. "I don't see how anyone can pick the final four playoff teams," Boerger added. "It figures to be a real wide-open tournament. The teams in the CIF top ten now are perhaps the strongest teams in the history of the poll." And the strongest of them all might be the one with eight losses. Only time will tell.
