'Windflowers' at Occidental "Windflowers," at Occidental College last week, was as fragile as its name. Bits of people's lives wafted in and out of reach and nobody seemed ever to change as much as they might have liked to. Some of the songs were lovely, especially the Old Man's Song, and some of the actors were nifty, especially Joanna Hall as both a hip artist and a onetime stand-in for Pola Negri, and Tom Giamaria as Harold, who's been around. The show can't sustain two acts. It isn't that exciting for that long.

If playwright Frank Denson cut it to one act, he'd still have a nebulous creation, but it would be, I think, a far more successful one. 'Gingham Dog' at Pavilion Matt Oppenheimer wrote, produced, directed, composed and scored the music for, choregraphed, designed costumes for, starred in and created "The Gingham Dog" at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion last Sunday. It was a lively children's show with an exquisite set, but I kept wondering where the Gingham Dog was. I saw a 7-year-old princess in distress (Maria Miller, who's really 9), a 150-year-old wizard who naturally wheezed a lot (Jon Mejia, in a wonderful gray face and beard), and a lot of other people, I i 1 xf i "0IIE OF THE YEAR'S 10 BEST!" Sexy 3 "KUw. Tubstrip" is too avant-garde a title. It should be called something more traditional, like "Corliss Archer Goes to the Baths." Written, directed and acted by students of the No No Nanette school of theater, it is not totally awful. The timing is off, the jokes are strained and the subplots far too involved to be taken seriously or comedi-cally. But it must be admitted there is a certain joie de vivre about the production which, even in the more tedious moments, keeps one awake.The sight of shy, aloof Brian forgetting the muscle-man of his high school dreams and going off into the sunrise with a nice boy from New Jersey is not exactly show stopping, which is unfortunate since this is how the show ends.

Even the sight of the boys in the baths disrobing is not enough these days (especially in a theater just off Santa Monica Blvd.) to ensure a long run. But "Tubstrip" does; for a couple of hours, take our minds off Nixon and inflation and remind us of a simpler time when immorality was fun. Hollywood Center Theater, 1451 N. A smiling, quipping, singing, dancing Margo Charming in jeans even jeans with "Margo" spelled out in rhinestones down one leg isn't Margo. In the: Long Beach Civic Light Opera production of "Applause," the musical based on "All About Eve," Nanette Fabray. plays Margo so ingratiatingly we immediately understand how in the end she can give up Broadway and its applause to cook lasagna for the man she -loves. The woman has very little drive. She has too much fun just living.

The audience has fun too (the first few rows at least, here the lyrics can be understood). But the dark side of the story is lost With Margo so human, Eve, the conniving aspiring actress who takes everything she can get from Margo, including her parts in plays, seems unnecessarily evil. Polly Norby as Eve was stiff in the first act but came into her own when she got to display Eve's pride and anger. The other actors are well suited to their roles and the musical numbers are nicely staged by Anita Mann, if not excitingly executed. South Coast's 'House of Blue Leaves' John Guare is a great American playwright Like Kafka, he writes of people turning into animals, and like a lot of Eastern Europeans he dips horror in poetry and it comes out as hilarity.

"House of Blue Leaves" is an autobiographical play, says the program, even though a lot of it never happened. It's very concerned with the search for fame, the relationship of "ordinary" people to famous people (they make a great audience), and the comforting thought that animals are not meant to be famous. There are also a number of murders and several nuns because (according to the logic of the play) the Pope is visiting New York. The casual insanity hadn't quite jelled when I saw the South Coast Repertory production. Hal Landon Jr.
