Seattle, a delightful place to see Sunday Morning, August 24,1986 (galueatan Sailo Ktvae 13-A SEATTLE, WASHINGTON In an earlier column, I stressed the fact that I am exceedingly impressed with the Pacific Northwest. Planning on embarking on a cruise, we recently flew to Seattle to board the Great Pacific Cruise Line's Columbia. The cruise itinerary included visits and stopovers at three ports where we had not only never been but hadn't even heard of, along with a visit to beautiful Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, and Vancouver, the site of Canada's great world's fair, Expo'86. The week's journey turned out to be one of the most delightful we'd ever experienced. Perhaps it was the small vessel to which I have become partial (though I have nothing against the larger more elegant ships); it could have been the very friendly service provided by the young people who worked aboard; it might have been the itinerary, and it's possible the scenery was a deciding factor.

Whatever, we Texans will enjoy the cool temperatures in the northwest, and flying into and out of Seattle the glories of snowcapped Mt. Ranier, the tallest on our continent, and the barreness of Mt. St. Helens and the land around it, was very impressive. We went a couple of days early (as is my custom) to sightsee a city in which I have spent very little time.

We flew on Delta out o'f Hobby which is an asset in itself since it is nearer to Galveston. Delta's connections are made in Worth, but there is a minimum of waiting time between flights. In Seattle, we took advantage of the Westin Hotel's weekend special which enables one to pay much less for ac- Water wanted RABAT, Morocco (AP) King Hassan II of Morocco, whose nation has just lived through five years of drought, is looking to the United States for more water. Incidently, this is a good time to remind you that to avail yourself of special rates like these, or for senior citizens, you will have to ask for them. I rarely hear lower prices volunteered.

And bargains are also found in the price of airline tickets and in some restaurants. Another point to be considered: all the beautiful cities of the world are not in Europe. Seattle, for instance, is believed to be one of the most livable cities of the country and one of the most "visitable" (I didn't say it, they did). One could spend a month here and never get to all the delicious restaurants for which it is noted. It prides itself on having the greatest number of stages for the performance of all the arts, and several excellent department stores and hundreds of boutiques offer unlimited opportunities for shopping of all kinds.

One of our Galveston natives, Bill Alpert, merchandises croissants that the entire city clamors for. Museums and many art galleries have spectacular exhibits year round, and sailing and other water are very big during the summer season. Seattle, ijuw called ''The Emerald City" (because of the surrounding waters and forests of that color) is younger than we are. Its beginnings dating from 1851. Business seems to be flourishing: the climate is warmer than inland cities at the same northern streets are clean, and the downtown buildings rival in design those found in Chicago, Pittsburg and San Francisco.

Because of the hilly terrain, many of the residential neighborhoods have views of the water or the mountains, a sight unequalled in other large metropolises. You can easily tell I found it absolutely marvelous and plan to return. On the first morning of our stay there, we left the Westin Hotel and headed in the direction of Puget Sound which we could see from our 42nd story window in the north tower. The Westin consists of two round towers which contribute to the bea ty of Sea ttle's sky 1 i ne. At the foot of the hill, at the waters edge, is the Pike Street Market.

This narrow covered area runs for five blocks between first Avenue and the overlook to the water. This was a place in which I could easily spend days, not just hours. Everything is sold here: fresh meats, fish and fowl, flowers and plants, live birds, fruits and vegetables of twice the size we see here; and the craftspeople were set up in booths willing to show ou how they made their cermaic, brass, wood, straw, plastic, aper, iron and precious metal items. Too, T-shirts and sweatshirts advertising Seattle were on sale. There are ice cream parlors, bakeries, and fast food and sit- down restaurants.

Terrific place. Several blocks toward town but still on the waterfront there is a crossover to the piers, where there are more shops, harbor tours, a museum and the aquarium, ferry terminals and the pier at which we boarded the Columbia for our journey up to Vancouver and back. Seattle Center, the leftover from Seattle's fair, offers arts and entertainments, while the Space Needle offers great food and an I I i I I I I 1 COUPON" $1O OFF Any Curl, Retouch Perm or Color at AGGRESSIVE BEAUTY SALON 1009-44th Street 763-5636 Offer good Aug. 26 1986 thru Aug. 30, 1986 By Appt.
