If there is a ballyhoo about anyone coming to town, theatres want him to see their show, and the shaving soap people want him to pose using their new lotion and the chances are he'll get a wire offering him most anything he wants to say that he likes a certain brand of hot dog best. Hundreds of dollars arc spent daily by thole publicity experts giving dinners, sending telegrams and cables, and burning up the telephone wires.

Cables of every description were flashed to the Graf Zeppelin Aviation heroes since Lindbergh's arrival have been greatly in demand. Visiting nobility is always good, and society endorsements aren't to be sneered at by any means. If a poor show can link up in some way with an international hero it might suddenly become a good show, and that's how it works. Or even a gaod show might bolster its business to record-breaking proportions, if it should be lucky enough to have been the show that the hero of the day on his only night in the city attended. There is a new phase to Manhattan motion picture life, that is a diversion.

It is the new-type small neighborhood houses in the swankier sections catering exclusively to foreign-made films. They are a novelty and as there are always those seeking the different in Manhattan, the houses are always well filled and playing. And it is planned this fall, so it is said, to bring at least one of the better Paris musical and girl shows to Broadway, to give New York a glimpse of what Parisians like in the way of girl shows. A French novelist recently was at the Roosevelt and admitted that there is fifty per cent more speed to a Broadway girl show than in the Paris or London music halls, and that the costumes are more pretentious, however few. The report is that 100 new shows will appear on Broadway before Christmas, which sounds like a lot but really isn't in view of the fact, that a big number will not last.
