Surging into the lead on the backstretch the second time around, the ex-clai-mer quickly opened' a four-length lead on the final turn, then lasted for a $39 surprise in the $32,950 Pomona Handicap before a closing day crowd of 463. Two lengths, back at the wire were Balcony's Babe and Knightlander, who were hoses apart after 1 18 miles in 1:52. Second money of $5,100 went to Balcony's Babe, the only mare in the field.

Harbor Prince, the solid favorite, was in contention for the first half mile, then dropped back steadily to finish last. The upset win rounded out a riding triple for Rudy Campas, who missed the first half of the Pomona meeting because of a 10-day suspension for his wrestling match on horseback with James Felton on closing day at Del Mar. Campas, 32, won with Oriental Fleet ($4.20) and Divisive Then came his victory in the richest thoroughbred race of the season, worth $19,450 that raised Specialamente's earnings to $39,655 since he was claimed last May 6 at Hollywood Park for $25,000 by trainer Hector O. Palma. The win gave Palma the training title at the Fair with a record of seven victories in 14 starts." Second money collected by Balcony's Babe in the Pomona 'Cap gave the stable of E.

B. (Pieman) Johnston earnings of a record at the Fair. The stable is trained by Fred Houghton. Bill Mahorney, who was at Bay Meadows and missed the final day at the Fair, edged Jerry Lambert for the riding crown, 12 victories to 11.
