pd. far by David Omtmr Election Cmip SOS CHy. TX 77573 Associated Press GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. A plane crashed during a snowstorm in the Colorado mountains Thursday, killing all 'six people aboard. The weather also forced crews to suspend a search for two men missing in an avalanche.

But four people were rescued from an avalanche shelter after being trapped for hours by a slide of snow that piled up 40 feet deep. The twin-engine Mitsubishi MU- 2 had departed from Spinks Airport in Fort Worth earlier Thursday. It reportedly was bound for the Aspen airport when it hit a snowstorm and was diverted to an airport in Rifle. Aspen is about 50 miles south of Glenwood Springs, and is 30 miles west of here. A spokesman with the Federal Aviation Administration in Oklahoma City said the 1981 aircraft, tail number N303CA, was registered to Stephen R.

Neece and John M. Geesbreght, both of Fort Worth. Rescuers on snowmobiles found the wreckage hours later about three miles south of New Castle, about 15 miles west of Glenwood Springs in west-central Colorado. None of the six people aboard survived, said sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Silvius. A National Transportation Safety Board investigator had said earlier there may have been seven people aboard, including the pilot, but authorities at the scene said there were only six.

The pilot's last communication was received when the plane was 325 READING NOW $10 at an altitude of 10,400 feet near Glenwood Springs, the sheriff's office said. "It was not a distress call," Silvius said, but the pilot requested an alternate route and was directed to Rifle. She said visibility was down to 500 The Rifle airport had no contact with the plane; said airport official Curtis Muncy. Authorities said no emergency locator transmitter signal had been received. Low cloud cover, rain in the valleys and snow in the high country hampered search efforts and grounded search planes, said Silvius.

On Feb. 13, an air ambulance on way from Grand Junction to Denver with a 2-year-old girl aboard crashed in a snowstorm near Glenwood Springs. The five people aboard were stranded overnight, but were rescued the next day. None suffered serious injuries. In southwestern Colorado, the fierce snowstorm forced officials to call off an attempt to find two snowplow drivers who were caught an avalanche on U.S.

550 in rugged Red Mountain Pass, at an elevation of 11,000 feet south of Ouray. The area had gotten 2 feet, of snow overnight. "It's dangerous up there and we're not going to put anybody at risk," said Pat O'Donnell, an Ouray County spokesman. The two missing men had been looking for stranded motorists who might have been caught on the. north side of the pass after an earlier snowslide closed the road, said Dan Hopkins, Department of Transportation spokesman.
