They were married July 29,1961. Women's diets lack nutrients By SUSAN RUSSELL County Extension Agent DICKINSON To meet the many demands placed on them at home and in the workplace, you'd think that most women would want to be in the best possible state of health. But evidently, many of them are not. Research stuojes indicate that today's woman is not getting suf: ficient amounts of certain vitamins and minerals, including calcium, iron, vitamin B-6 and folacin. Although women are smaller than men, those of child-bearing age need about twice as much iron.

Iron is a mineral required to form hemoglobin, the oxygen- carrying part of the blood Without enough iron, iron-deficiency anemic results. Symptoms of iron-deficiency include fatigue paleness, dizziness, sensitivity to cold and reduced work capacity. Foods rich in iron include meats, dry beans, green leafy vegetables and enriched breads and cereals. Iron is absorbed better from meals when a source of ascorbic acid is also included, such as tomatoes or citrus fruit. Some women who don't eat enough iron-rich foods may need an iron supplement.

Many women take in only half of the recommended 800 milligrams of calcium each day. This is of special concern, since many experts believe that the 800 milligrams recommendation is actually too low. Too little calcium over a long period of time is one of the main factors linked to the painful, crippling condition called osteoporosis. Calcium is lost from bones, so they become very fragile and break with the slightest movement. The condition most often shows up in elderly women.

Osteoporosis may be prevented by a calcium-rich diet and regular exercise. Milk and milk products are the best sources of calcium. Two and three-fourths cups of milk provide enough calcium to meet the current recommendation for 800 milligrams per day. Nondairy sources of calcium include collard and mustard greens and salmon and sardines with edible bones. Mr.

Incontinent adult group offers help By ABIGAIL VAN BUREN DEAR ABBY: I am a 69-year- old grandmother living in Spartanburg, S.C. That's not important, but this is: Because of something I read in your column three years ago, I found the answer to a problem that had very nearly made me a recluse. It was the kind of problem I was too embarrassed about to even discuss. Because you solved my problem with a single letter in your column, I beg you to free others and repeat the letter that did so much for me. It's enclosed THANKFUL IN S.C.

DEAR THANKFUL: I'm thankful to you for reminding me that there are many readers out there who need this information as much as you did. And here's the letter: DEAR READERS: If you don't have a bladder control problem you're lucky. But if you are among the estimated 10 million Americans (or Canadians) who are incontinent to an annoying degree or know someone who is -readon: When you sneeze, cough or laugh, do you feel a wetness on your clothing? When you come home, do you DEAR ABBY find that you can't get your key in the door fast enough to make ft to the bathroom in time? What can a man wear after a prostate operation for the days (or weeks) he has a little These are the kinds of questions and concerns that have brought a few men and women together to form a self-help group for people with urinary or bladder control problems. They named their new organization HIP Help for Incontinent People. For a copy of the organization's helpful newsletter, send a long stamped (22 cents), self-addressed envelope to: HIP, Box 544, Union S.C.

I have seen the newsletter and assure you it is worth sending for. "It's a story about a reporter whose editor sends her to Mexico to do a story about the Mayans, and the adventures she has while she's there," the fourth-grader said, giving a summary of the book she was reading. Sonia was attending one of the "Reading is Fun" sessions at the Molma Neighborhood Center this summer by the West Oso Minded Organization. The children gather around the patio to read. Some read together some alone, and older children and adults help younger ones.

They read everything: mysteries, adventures, magazines, paperbacks and hardcovers. But they read. "The program began in an attempt to promote, provide and create educational opportunities in the West Oso district. Reading for fun is one of the methods we came up with," said Danny Noyola, a volunteer at the center. Parents, ex-students and community leaders formed the organization that sponsors the program.

Neighborhood members like Noyola, volunteer their time to help at the center. Others from outside the neighborhood, like County Attorney Carlos Valdez and Jon J. Kelly, a local attorney, also donate their time. "Children often find that reading what they want to read instead of what they are told to read is an enjoyable experience This is what we are trying to show them that reading is fun," said center director Rudy Sosa. The participants in the program range in age from preschool children to high school students.

Adults will read to younger children who haven't learned to read. Sosa said the reading does not necessarily have to fast the entire hour. "We try to remain flexible. If the kids are ready to play basketball, we start the game. It is important to keep the atmosphere fun and relaxed.

If they read for that's a success."
