Skies were clear Saturday as the mercury climbed into the mid- 80s in South Texas. In West Texas, high pressure remained over the region, causing mostly sunny skies. Afternoon temperatures were in the 70s, except for some 60s in the southwest mountains. An upper level ridge of high pressure continued to influence North Texas weather.

Temperatures at 3 p.m. were in the 70s to the lower 80s. The South Texas forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and unseasonably warm conditions again. Texas City teen gives up his shoes at gunpoint By PATRICK WIER The Daily News TEXAS CITY A 15-year-old Texas City boy reported he was robbed at gunpoint of his basketball shoes early Saturday morning near a Texas City fast food restaurant. The youth reported he was at the restaurant on Palmer Highway about 1:25 a.m.

when he got into an argument with a group of teenagers, according to police reports. The 15-year-old left in his car, and the teen-agers followed him to his house near the 4000th block of POLICE Eighth Street. One of the pursuers got out of his vehicle and confronted the 15-year- old, pointing a semi-automatic pistol at him and demanding his $50 Fila basketball shoes, reports state. The victim complied, and the robber left with his shoes, reports state. Cocaine possession TEXAS CITY A 19-year-old Texas City man was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine late Friday, according to police reports.

Police reported that about 11:45 p.m. Friday they saw a group of men standing in the intersection of Park and Texas Avenues in Texas City. When they approached the group, a man in the group walked away quickly and dropped something on the ground, reports state. Police found a total of 16 rocks of cocaine and $157 in small bills, reports state. Oscar Allen, 19, of Texas City was arrested and charged with cocaine possession.

Aggravated robbery GALVESTON A 40-year-old Houston man reported he was robbed at knifepoint early Saturday morning in Galveston. About 1:30 a.m. the man was walking toward his car parked near the 2500 block of The Strand when another man pulled a knife and demanded his money. The victim handed over his snakeskin wallet with $250. The robber took it and ran, reports stated.

Restroom arrest GALVESTON A 61-year-old Houston man was charged with co- caine possession after he allegedly pulled out a bag of cocaine in a Galveston bar bathroom Friday night with a state trooper in the room, according to police reports. The Department of Public Safety officer reported that he went into Lipstick on The Strand about 11 p.m. as part of the Mardi Gras patrol and followed a man into the bathroom. The man apparently didn't realize the trooper was behind him and took a plastic bag containing white powder out of his pocket when the two entered the bathroom, according to reports. Home porn makers face charges Associated Press COOKEVILLE, Tenn.

A couple who went on television to talk about their business in homemade sex videos are now facing obscenity charges and fighting for return of their 9-year-old daughter from state custody. Jean and Jack Lee Ashcraft Jr. appeared on the "Sally Jessy Raphael" talk show in November to discuss their enterprise. Since then, the state Department of Human Services placed the child in a foster home and grand jury indictments led to their arrest. "I'm sorry we ever made them," said Mrs.

Ashcraft, 43. "It was a mistake going on that television show. A big one. Everything was going along all right until we did that." Mrs. Ashcraft said the movies weren't obscene and her daughter was never around to see anything.

"They were not any worse than any of those X-rated movies you can rent at your video store," she said. Fugitive mother's life on run comes to end Associated Press ROCHESTER, N.Y. A California woman was captured four years after she kidnapped her daughter and became a fugitive when a judge rejected claims the girl's father sexually abused the child, the FBI said. April Robyn Curtis, 30, was arrested Friday at the home she shared with her two children and new husband, Christopher Meyer, said FBI Agent Dale Anderson. Meyer, who married the woman last year, wasn't charged.

Curtis evaded authorities by traveling and using false names, with help from an "underground railroad" of people dedicated to helping parents who make such claims against ex-spouses, Anderson said. Agents also arrested Kenneth Moore Brewster, 43, an alleged accomplice. Both were held without bail on federal fugitive warrants. Curtis took her daughter, Amanda, now 8, in 1988 after losing a child-custody battle with the girl's father, Brian Otter of Yucaipa, Calif. The girl was under county care until she could be returned to Otter.

"It's been four years. I'm so relieved that they've found them and that my daughter is safe," Otter told a local newspaper on Friday. "It's going to be a happy reunion for us." California authorities said Curtis, with Brewster's help, fled San Bernardino County with Amanda to avoid returning the girl after a visit. The FBI says they traveled across the nation, sleeping in cars and staying with clandestine groups that give shelter and new identities to parents who believe their children were molested by ex-spouses. "The fear was always there with us," Meyer said.

"You're always afraid that something like this will The couple shot videos of their lovemaking after Ashcraft, 36, found an ad in a magazine for do- it-yourself sex videos. They wrote scripts and shot the movies in their house trailer. A grand jury indicted the couple on charges they produced obscene material for distribution. An arraignment was set for March 24. In a report, a sheriff's deputy said he accompanied a human services worker to the child's school last November and to the Ashcraft home.

Magazines, letters and vid- eotapes were confiscated and the child was taken from the home, the report said. County DHS case supervisor Rena Nunnally did not respond to a message The Associated Press left Saturday on her telephone answering machine. "There was pornographic material in the bedroom and other rooms in the house," said Sheriff Jerry Abston. "All the child would have to do to get it was get on a stool and crawl up on a table or cabinet," he said. Jury clears man who had agreed to 25-year term Associated Press RICHMOND A jury found a Colorado man innocent after a judge rejected his plea bargain in the drug-related slaying of a Houston police officer's son.

Judge Brady G. Elliott had rejected the plea bargain in June because he thought the 25-year prison sentence would not have been severe enough. Charles Thayer, 19, was found innocent Friday of the Aug. 10, 1990, execution-style shooting of Montgomery "Cass" Adolph, 21, the son of Houston police Officer C.E. Adolph.

Prosecutors said he will be transferred to the Harris County Jail where he still faces auto theft charges. Prosecutor Frank Briscoe said jurors were "surprised and resentful" after the verdict was rendered and he told them Thayer earlier had offered a plea. Briscoe was prevented by law from telling the jury of the arrangement during the trial. "The plea was to be given on June 10, 1991, and all the papers were filled out," Briscoe said. "The court's opinion was that it was not a serious enough punishment." The judge said Friday he did not recall the plea and too much time had passed to remember the reasons why it was rejected.

"I know the jurors were very emotional about the case," Elliott said. "It was a hard-fought case." The younger Adolph, who worked at a nightclub, was shot in the back of the head. Knievel's stuntman son crashes short of record Associated Press CERRITOS, Calif. Legendary stuntman Evel Knievel's son attempted a world record motorcycle jump over 25 pickup trucks Saturday, but fell short and bounced off one of the vehicles, witnesses said.

Robbie Knievel was airborne over the line of trucks, but his motorcycle crashed atop the 22nd vehicle and the stunt artist was thrown to the ground. He was treated for abrasions to his buttocks at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and later released, said hospital spokesman Ron Yukelson. The younger Knievel was attempting a hands-free jump over the pickup trucks about 4 p.m. with a crowd of several thousand people watching, said Jerry Dubbey, a sales representative at Moon Nissan, the automobile retailing center where the accident occurred during a promotional event. Dubbey said Knievel was sliding out of control during his approach and failed to gain enough speed to complete the 180-foot jump.

The younger Knievel's father gained fame attempting to vault file Snake River Canyon in the 1970s in a rocket-powered device. He failed but lived to tell about it. He was the subject of a 1971 movie about his exploits that starred George Hamilton.
