"It's very good for the children. There is already much greater individual help for a pupil on both emotional and academic levels," Mrs.

Shaffer said. With the help of the aides, a new library program has been developed in which all of the Primary 1 youngsters meet weekly in the library with each involved in his learning experience through three to five possible activity centers. In the classroom, instructional aides, 51 of whom are parents, help individuals or small groups, supervise recess, assist with drill practice, keep records, make instructional materials, and do any number of other tasks in making the day run smoother from one activity to another. Beverly Vista is one of approximately 1,000 elementary schools involved in the state's new Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program, funded this year at a cost of $25 million and considered by Wilson Riles, state superintendent of public instruction, as the single most important accom--plishment of his administration. The program is designed to bolster learning by restructuring the primary grades, to increase cornr munity involvement in local education, and to promote greater' individualization of instruction by lowering the classroom ratio of children to adults to 10 to 1. The Beverly Vista program was funded at $21,000 by the state. The two major differences between the ECE classroom and a normal one at the elementary school are increased time for working with individual children and increased parent involvement in education. On both a full time and part-time basis, 14 paid teacher aides, funded by the state, and 10 parent volunteer aides help the 123 youngsters and the teachers in the kindergartens of Ethel Moulton and Linda Shaffer and the primary 1 classes of Evelyn Banner, Carol Katzman and Anne Pepys.
