It would have resulted in a tie. "This is a great way to start the year," said Trevino, who successfully masked any disappointment he might have felt. "I'm usually a slow starter.

But I predicted that this will be Lee Trevino's best year." Already, it's among Mahaffey's best. The win was the fourth of his eight-year career on the tour. That doesn't count a victory in the World Cup in December, which gives him four wins in the last five months. The difference? "Confidence," said Mahaffey, who, at 5-9 and 150 pounds, has picked up about 15-20 yards on his driving. "I think I know now what it takes to win." Mahaffey heads next week to Phoenix but he's skipping the San Diego Open the following week because of some bad blood.

It seems that when Mahaffey lost his exemption, he sent letters to certain tournaments asking for a free exemption. San Diego officials, he said, did not bother even to reply. "A lot of tournaments offered me exemptions without me even asking," he said. "I'll play those tournaments forever. There's no way I'll play San Diego." The Hope was among the tournaments which offered him an exemption.

ip.l2) COMMUNITY HONDA HO) E. 8M. WNUsr lit) ett-am m-we Mahaffey Beats Continued from First Page with two consecutive rounds of 66, Mahaffey led from the second round. He made the shots he had to make. It's a winning formula.

Mahaffey began the day with a one-stroke lead over Trevino, the second-leading money winner of all time and a vintage front-runner. But Mahaffey wasn't going to allow anyone to pass him. Mark Hayes, who shot a 66 and finished with a 345 for third place, challenged for a while. Indian Wells was yielding low scores to anyone willing to take them, and the leaders were bunched tightly for most of the afternoon. But it was destined to be Mahaffey and Trevino.

Trevino birdied No. 15, a par 3, to pull even briefly. But almost as soon as Trevino plucked his ball from the hole, Mahaffey tapped in for a birdie on 14, missing an eagle by 6 inches. On 15 through 17, Mahaffey missed birdie putts by the width of a cactus needle. Knowing he had to birdie 18, Trevino got all of his second shot and sent it sailing over the green into a sprinkler head.

He got a free drop and putted from the fringe to 1G feet from the hole. Trevino nursed his putt into the hole. Mahaffey took out an eight-iron, then called for a seven. He first planned to hit his shot before Trevino, playing one group ahead of him, putted. Then, because the crowd would not move, he waited.

"Three years ago, I would have hit the ball anyway," Mahaffey said. "I would have a bad shot and then blamed the crowds. But now I've been in these kinds of situations. I know what to do." It was worth the wait. Eighteen months ago, Mahaffey didn't know if he'd ever play again.

He was on the verge of giving up afraid to try and afraid not to. Now at 30, he's on the verge of stardom. He talks about winning more majors, about being remembered, about winning as many tournaments as he possibly can. "Trevino is a great player," he said. "Nicklaus is a great player.

It's an honor to play in the same tournament when they're playing in it." Trevino was in it. Nicklaus was, too, but only in a manner of speaking. Despite a hole in one the ninth in his career, the third on the tour he never came closer than four strokes and finished seven back in a three-way tie for 11th. Hayes led Grier Jones by a shot. Jones snot a 68 and typified this day at Indian Wells.

All week the greens there had been fast but they were watered down for the final day. And the first 18 finishers all shot final-day subpar rounds. Thus, Mahaffey's 69 was not exceptional merely ample. He had said Saturday he would be satisfied to shoot the East Routs West in Japan Bowl Frtm Timet Win Strvlcts TOKYO Drew Hill of Georgia Tech returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and Purdue's Russell Pope ran back a punt 65 yards for another score Sunday, leading the East to a 33-14 rout of the West in the fourth Japan Bowl football game. A crowd of 55,000 saw the East, coached by Lee Corso of Indiana and Gary Moeller of Illinois, even the series between American collegiate all-star teams at 2-2 in a game that was established to commemorate the United States bicentennial.

The West team was coached by Don James of Washington and Bill Yeoman of Houston. PHONI (319) 44M-M09 North Carellu S3, Afkuau ST The Tar Heels, switching from a zone to a man-to-man defense, did an outstanding job of denying Arkansas' Sidney Moncrief the ball in the second half and slipped past the Razorbacks at Greensboro, N.C. The win gave North Carolina a 12-2 record while Arkansas lost its second straight after opening the season with 10 wins. Arkansas, which never led, tied the game at 52-52 with 650 to play but Dudley Bradley came up with back-to-back steals that helped UNC take a 56-52 lead and the Tar Heels went to their four-corner offense to seal the win. North Carolina made nine of 10 free throws while using its delay game. Moncrief 19; Rich Yonaker (NO 13.
