Since its creation the duties of the board have broadened to include a wide range of city work. In addition to caring for the streets and sidewalks the Street and Sewer Department directors have control over street lighting; use of streets for public utilities; rules and regulations for control of all vehicular and pedestrian traffic; drainage of streets; collection and disposal of ashes; care of sidewalk trees; regulation and supervision of public curbstone markets; registry of property transfers; and acts as official weather bureau for U.

S. Department of Joseph L. Carpenter, of this city, who recently observed his 100th birthday, was the first person named in the act. and served as the first president of the board of directors. Board Personnel Present members of the board are: Frank C.
