If they came into the conflict under those circumstances, they would automatically become one of the Allies. That would make Hitlers western front a hot spot.

King Boris was a dictator by nature. As virtually absolute monarch he carried his pepole into the war on the side of the Axis. He probably was impelled to do this because of Germanys powerful influence in the Balkan peninsula, because he thought the Reich was likely to win and bestow favors on Bulgaria, and because he was son-in-law of the king of Italy. However, the Bulgarian people followed Boris into the war on the side of the Axis reluctantly. They are largely anti-German and are very pro-Russian, because of the Slavic affinity.

He who ries to make them fight further for Hitler is inviting trouble. Perhaps the king lost his life because he finally recognized the futility of trying to force his subjects to give further support to the Nazis. We dont know how he died, but there are all sorts of reports going the rounds and it may be time will disclose that he was assassinated on Nazi orders because he told Hitler in their recent conference that the game was up. The story Is told that after the second attack on the Kelly, the senior officer of a nearby British ship signaled In, 'prepare to abandon ship. Intend to sink you.

Mountbatten signaled in reply: Shall open fire on first blank who tries anything of the sort. The end of the Kelly, which was dive-bombed off Crete, became popular history in In Which We Serve. Mountbatten succeeded to command of the aircraft carrier Illustrious, but while she was laid up for repairs In New York, Lord Louis suddenly was called to Britain on a secret mission. lie was made Chief of Combined Operations in which position he commanded the Commandos. He has the reputation of being as close to the men in his command as any ranking officer In any British service.

Tall, thin, fit and handsome. Lord Louis looks younger even than his 43 years. Like his boss, Winston Churchill, of whom he Is In many ways reminiscent, he has tremendous zest and energy and personal magnetism. Also, like Churchill, he is tremendously loyal to his friends. Both have been criticized for carrying this too far.

Lord Louis works long and fast. He is constantly on the phone or talking personally with people. He likes to stand, pace, smack fist Into palm while he talks. He avoids paper work as much as possible, but insists on dally reports from every branch of his staff and reads these very carefully as lax officers have found to their chagrin. Lord Louis can be tough, bawling out like the saltiest sailor.

But, as one Junior officer put it, when he shouts at you, its not as an admiral, but as an angry man. His work as Chief of Combined Operations was done for the most part at his office. His greatest job has been welding three services Into one. Every office In headquarters Is plastered at his order with green wallsdckers on which red letters proclaim One foe, one fight, one force. He Is devoted to his two daughters, who recently returned from a long stay in the United States.

Patricia, the elder, brought traces of an American accent, which delighted her father. Lord Louis is a grei admirer of America and Americans and he was the first British staff officer to add Americans to his staff after Pearl Harbor. In Mountbatten, America has a real friend where a friend can be very helpful In the war against Japan. Coal Mine Explosions Kill 21, Injure 23 Others Birmingham, Aug. 30.
