NEWS JOURNAL TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2004 www.delawareonline.com OBITUARIES John Mathewson Graham "Jack" John "Jack" Mathewson Graham died Thursday, September 23,2004, at Woodstock Terrace in Woodstock, VT at the age of 95. He was born February 16, 1909 in New Castle, PA to William Clark Greenman and Helen Jean Mathewson Graham. Jack had great ability to friends da and influence people. emate was a graduate of Penn State University, where he played clarinet in the marching band and later in the alumni marching band. He received a Master of Science degree in chemistry from Lehigh University and worked for Hercules Chemical Company for years.

He was devoted wife, Dorofor over 50 years. They met while, playing in Eugene Ormandy's Philadelphia Orchestra. Music became a major harmonizing influence in their life. They remained active in orchestras and chamber music groups in Wilmington, DE, and later when they moved to Hanover. Jack began playing with the Lyme Town Band at the age of 85.

Jack Graham was ceased by his wife, Dorothy Survivors include 2 sons, John M. Graham, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA and Alan C. Graham of South Pomfret, VT; and 5 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College in Hanover NH at 5 pm on Sunday, October 31.

A second graveside service will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, November 6, in West Laurel Hills Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, PA. Louise Murgatroyd Hatch www.chandlerfuneralhome.com 302-478-7100 Age 107, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, September 26, 2004 at the Methodist Country House, Greenville, where she had resided for many years and where she had received excellent care. She was the daughter of the late William Christopher and Minnie Lippincott Murgatroyd, and the widow of Joseph Richmond Hatch. Long involved in volunteer work, she was active in the Wilmington area Girl Scouts, YWCA, and the Wilmington New Century Club, where she directed many plays.

She was also active in the Home of the Merciful Rest (now Kentmere) where she resigned as a volunteer when she realized, "I was older than those supposed to the Homeopathic Hospital (later Memorial and Christiana Hospitals), where she was a member of the Junior Board for over 85 years, Wilmington Board of Health, and Christian Service of Grace United Methodist Church. She was the oldest alumna of Wilmington Friends School. Survivors are her son, Joseph William Hatch of Wilmington; grandchildren and their spouses, Catherine Hatch Young and Barry of Wilmington, Joseph Weir Hatch and Deborah of Virginia Beach, VA, and Susan H.R. Calvin and John of Newark; and 3 great-grandchildren, Emily Roark of Newark and Shannon and Ryan Hatch of Virginia Beach. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, October 1, 2004 in the Chapel of the Methodist Country House.

Son of the late and Cecelia R. (McKelvey) Charles, Hayes, Charles was born in Wilmington. He retired as a pattern maker in 1979 from the Dupont Company 44 years of employment. also Chambers Works division, after worked at Parklyn Hardware Store on a part-time basis. A 1935 graduate of Salesianum School, he was a member of St.

Matthew's Church and Holy Name Society, and coached the St. Matthew's Little League Baseball Team. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Monaghen Council. In his youth, Charles was a member of the Elmhurst AA Baseball Team. Mr.

Hayes will be dearly missed by his of 58 years, Audrey M. (Duffy). Hayes; his daughter, Audrey Dixon and her husband, Bill; his 3 sons, Bob and his wife, Sue, Jan and his companion, Vickie Lucas; and Chuck and his wife, Lois, all of Wilmington. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, Lauren and Ernest Garcia, and Julie, Katie, Lisa, Chad and Mark Hayes. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 29 at 10:30 am at St.

Jester was born i in Harrington, DE, the son of the late William E. and Bessie Jester. Robert worked for for over 39 years. He started as a meter reader and progressed to an engineers helper. In 1969, he became the manager of the Chincoteague office and in 1979, he became the manager of the office, until retirement in 1991.

Along with Bill Minner and Frank O'Neil, Mr. Jester was instrumental in starting the Harrington Little League team and he also managed American Legion team for many years. Mr. Jester's passion was golf. He loved to play golf frequently, and often played with MISGA members.

He was a member of the American Legion Frank M. JarLodge and was a member of the Chester Lodge 115 of the Masons after he transferred from the Milford Lodge. He belonged to the Chestertown Club and was a past president. He also served on the Board of Directors for 2 terms. Mr.

Jester will be remembered as a devoted husband and father. Survivors include his loving wife of 51 wonderful years, Mary of Chestertown; son, Darrell T. Jester of Chestertown, MD; brothers, Donald Jester of Harrington, and William R. Jester of New Canaan, CT, and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Harrington, with a Masonic service at 7:45 pm.

He was born May 2, 1915 in Lexington, MA, the eldest son of Charles A. Leishman, Sr. and Sara (Buckle) Leishman.

He married Helen Louise "Polly" Swarm on June 16, 1940 in Seattle, WA. Charlie and Polly traveled by automobile to every state of the union plus many of the Canadian provinces. Charlie retired from the US Postal Service in 1980. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and a 56 year member of Mt. Herman Lodge 197 in Hyattsville, MD.

Polly predeceased Charlie January 18, 2000. His son, Stephen A. and his wife, Janet, of Wilmington; daughter, Margaret L. Hughes and her husband, Lawrence, of Arnold, MD; 4 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren survive Charlie. He is also survived by a brother, Russell W.

Betty Lynn was raised in Elsmere and spent most of her adult years in Southern CA. Betty Lynn was a graduate of Conrad H.S., class of 1971, and Delaware Technical Community College, School of Nursing, class of 1993. Betty Lynn pursued a life of caring for the very young and old and was guided by words of Christ when he said "Inasmuchas you have done this unto the least of these, you have done Betintonmene (Matthew 25:40) the last 8 years of her life caring for victims of Alzheimer's disease at the VA Medical Center in Perry Point, MD. After retiring to Rehoboth Beach he went to work as a real estate broker. "Lum" enjoyed reading, sailing, drawing and spending time with his grandchildren. He attended World Outreach Church in Murfreesboro, TN.

He is survived by his wife, Betty B. Seemans of Rehoboth Beach; 3 sons, David L. and his wife, Ruth Ann of Blackbird, DE, Harry T. and his wife, Linda of Bozman, MD, and Ray B. and wife, Emmie of Murfreesboro, his, 2 step children, Jeffrey W.

Seemans and his wife, Pam, and Beverly B. Seemans of Marshallton, DE; 4 grandchildren, David, Dale, Christie and Katie; and 3 great-grandchildren. Ursula Gompertz Shaw Age 85 died Monday, September 27, 2004 at Merwick Rehabilitation Center, Princeton. Born in Hanover, Germany, she escaped Germany in 1938. She fought in the British Army during World War against the Nazis. She lived in Uruguay for 30 years before moving to the US in 1963.

She returned to Uruguay for 5 years before moving to the US in 1970 where she lived in Wilmington, DE for 28 years. She moved to Franklin Park in 1998. She relocated to Belle Mead earlier this year. Mrs. Shaw was also a congregant of the Jewish Community Center of Belle Mead.

Charles Lewis Morse Age 87 of Rehoboth Beach, DE, died Monday, September 27, 2004 in Salisbury Genesis Elder Care, Salisbury, MD. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late William H. and the late Cora E. (Mann) Morse. Mr.

Morse worked for the Dupont Company for 41 years as a chemical engineer. His memberships included, the Kiwanis Club in Rehoboth Beach, All Saints Episcopal Church in Rehoboth Beach, DE, and Hiram Lodge 21 AM in Seaford, DE. He was in the US Army and served during WW including D- Day. Survived by his wite, Kathryn Morse; 1 daughter, Deborah Morse of Salisbury, MD; 2 sons, Charles of Dallas, TX and Kauai, HI, and Phillip Morse of Whitehaven, PA, and 1 brother, William H. Morse, Jr.

of Bath, NY. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Morse. A private funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, September 30, 2004 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel in Millsboro, DE. Father Max Wolf will officiate. Born in Wilmington on May 8, 1955, Mrs. Smiga was a graduate of William Penn High School. She was employed as a business systems analyst with Alico, Inc. in Wilmington for 12 years until her retirement in 1995. A devout Christian, Mrs.

Smiga was a member of Fair Haven Church in Middletown and had served as the church's secretary. She will be remembered her devotion to her family and for her great love of music. She is survived by 3 sons, Gregory Smiga, at home, Christopher Smiga of Buford, GA and Matthew Smiga of Marietta, GA; mother, Barbara Alice Jackson Cox of Wilmington; 2 brothers, Harold Cox and his wife, Kathleen, of Bear and John Cox and his wife, Francine Young, of Newark; 3 sisters, Barbara Spilka of Bear, Connie Hicks and her husband, Arthur, of New Castle and Debra Tarker and her husband, Thomas, of Newark; former spouse, Tom Smiga of New Castle; and 6 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, William W. Cox; and her father, Harry Ray Cox.

A memorial service will be held at 7 pm on Thursday, September 30, 2004, at Ogletown Baptist Church, 316 Red Mill Road. Newark. lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to National Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd Street, Ste. 1100, New York, NY 10016.
