Although the eightfold path involves right views and right actions, Gimello named meditation as "the key to the path." "It may be easier to follow the path in a monastery but it can be practiced in every walk of life," he said. Gimello pointed out that "the idea of seeking detachment may make Buddhism seem but said, ''This is not true because compassion is a primary aspect of Buddhist belief and practice. A condition of salvation in Buddhism Is that a Buddhist must also seek liberation for every other sentient being." The liberation, or nirvana, is a release from the unending cycle of birth, death and return (reincarnation) called Samsara.

"Buddhists believe there is a kind of natural law of moral causation (karma) operating in the world as natural as a law of physics like gravity and that every time a being commits a conscious act, that act will have consequences. "Depending on whether the act is an animal or go into one of the many Buddhist hells. In later forms of Buddhism, there is also a 'Pure Lands' concept, a celestial place which is presided over by Buddhists. "This is not like going to heaven. The karma still has to be worked out but individuals here are not encumbered by the same measure of difficulty; conditions make it easier to practice the path." Or the rebirth may be into another world or world system, of which there are an infinite number.

"There is a saying that there are as many worlds as there are grains of sand in the River Ganges," Gimello said. Enlightened beings can emerge from all of them, he said. "And, in principle, any enlightened being can become a Buddha. "Buddhists believe that all beings have within them the seeds of the Buddha, which must be nourished until they sprout. "In theory, it is available to all," said Gimello.

The nature of that which is available is seen as an indescribable freedom or as a state of being too sublime for human description, said Gimello. good or bad, the consequences will be good or bad. If it is bad, there will be some form of inevitable punishment." The punishment is not the result of a divine judgment; it results from the negative karma the subtle "residue" from past wrongdoings thafis carried from life to life until it is worked out. Gimello said there is a "tricky" aspect to the belief in reincarnation: "Buddhists do not believe in the And if there is no soul, what is it that is reborn? This has been the inevitable question from the beginning. "Buddhists believe that what we call 'self or 'myself is really a complex collection of experiences that is always changing.

"It's roughly similar to the concept of 'biological replacement' in which all the molecules of the body are replaced every seven years. "What we call 'ourselves' is a constantly changing flux of experiences and the direction of its continuance is rebirth." Whatever it is that returns does not necessarily return in human form or into this particular world, Gimello said. "An individual may be reborn as Jacki Bell, The Arizona Daily Star From left, Sam Amos, Hee Jung and Yong Hui Kim in a prayer session Celebration of Buddha's birthday set Continued from Page 1C everything." Markl said, "If, at the count of four, you start wondering if you left your keys in the car, you just gently go back and start again. "You can't force the mind to be quiet; it doesn't work. But if you learn to relax and bring the body and the breath into a peaceful state, then the mind will be one with whatever you are doing." For the meditation, a Buddha, or yoga, posture is assumed, either the full lotus position with both feet on the thighs, or the half lotus position with one leg on the thigh, Markl said.

"The eyes are lowered to a 45-de-gree angle. They are partially open but unfocused. "The idea is to learn to be fully present to the moment, not only during the meditation but in everyday life. "The true self is absolutely one with everything. Meditation brings you more in touch with yourself and with your oneness with the universe," Markl remarked.

Markl works for the Tucson Association for the Blind and also teaches philosophy at Pima Community College. Hee Jung was chief of the Zen Buddhism Culture Research Center in Korea for 12 years and the master priest at a Buddhist temple for five years before being sent to Tucson to serve the estimated Koreans here and to propagate Zen Buddhism, he said. Hee Jung's daily schedule here includes the conducting of three religious services a day, at 4:30 and 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., in which the chanting of East Indian and Chinese scriptures plays a primary role, periods of meditation, and the counseling of members of the temple community. The group hopes to eventually build a Korean-style Buddhist temple in Tucson, he said.

Until he 'died at 80, he spent the rest of his life preaching and Reaching his Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path to liberation. Gimello said, "Buddhism is not now one of the largest religious traditions but, in the history of reli-'gion, it has probably touched more lives than any other. "It was very successful in promulgating itself. From India, it spread quickly through South and Central Asia, then Southeast Asia and on to eastern Asia.

"Today, two of the major sects or traditions within Buddhism Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhism still survive, with the former practiced mainly in Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand and Cambodia (Kampuchea), land the latter in Tibet, China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam." In America, where Buddhism is practiced (an estimated 330,000 Buddhists live in North America), it is usually these two forms of the religion, as well as zazen, a meditation practice (See related story), which are followed, Gimello said.
