His University of Delaware team did first. Unleashed by the prospect of nailing down career victory No.

300 for their coach, the Blue Hens went after Richmond with passion and purpose that had been brewing for a week. Despite Raymond's urgings to play for themselves and not for him, they didn't listen in a 10-6 Atlantic 10 victory witnessed by a delirious turnout of 18,923. "Last comment I made before I went out for the coin toss," senior captain Darrell Edmonds said, "was, 'Let's make history today' And that's what we did." The responsibility was willingly shouldered by the Blue Hens. They lifted Raymond into a realm just nine coaches have reached in college football's 133-year history. Raymond, four days shy of his 75th birthday, was glad to get the accomplishment out of the way and be rid of the attention it has brought.

"It was one of the most pressure situations in my life," he said. At the same time, he appreciated the moment and its significance. "It's a wonderful thing," said Raymond, who became a Delaware assistant coach in 1954 and was Hall-of-Famer Dave Nelson's hand-picked successor in 1966. "I've made all kinds of jokes about it, but all you've got to do to get 300 is win eight or nine ball-games for 35 years, if you stay alive for that long. "I'm very pleased that it happened at Delaware.

Delaware football has been my life. I'd like to see good things happen to Delaware football, especially in that stadium." The victory gave Delaware its first two-game winning streak of the 2001 season. See RAYMOND -D8 SPECIAL SECTION A muted celebration marks win After quick speech, Raymond departs By MARTIN FRANK Staff reporter NEWARK The chants of "Tub-by!" didn't start until there were seven seconds left in Saturday's game, the shadows having spread across Delaware Stadium, and Tubby Raymond one snap away from his 300th career victory. From there, everything transpired Quickly The customary cooler of Gatorade was dumped on Raymond's head as Richmond quarterback Cordell Roane's pass fell incomplete, preserving Delaware's 10-6 victory. The construction worker was by then high up in the cherry picker, placing a large red line through the number 300 on the outside wall of the Carpenter Center overlooking the field, just above the lines through 299, 298, 297 and 296.

And Raymond was hoisted onto one of his players' shoulders as the team marched triumphantly to midfield, where Darrell Edmonds gathered all the players and thanked them, God, and his "legendary coach" for the victory. Soon after, Raymond gave a short speech to the fans, saying he felt like Yankees great Lou Gehrig during his farewell at Yankee Stadium. Then, with a towel around his neck, his gray hair still perfectly combed, he walked off the field, one arm around his wife, Diane, the other around his son, Chris. That was it. "He took none of the glory for himself.

He passed all of it on to the fans," said Gene Zaborowski of Newark, a longtime Blue Hens season-ticket holder. "It was typical Tubby." And in a way, this subdued celebration was fitting for a poach who spent the entire season and the entire past 8-page tribute to Tubby Raymond's 300th win.
