As the rare player who had been in both schools' football programs, Beasley was a leading advocate of the two ending their long standoff and agreeing to play each other. After meeting for the first time in a 2007 NCAA playoff, Delaware and Delaware State met in their inaugural regular-season game Sept.

19, 2009, at Delaware Stadium. Beasley was an honorary captain and deeply honored to be chosen, he said that day for the pregame coin toss. "That was something he always hoped would happen," Romaine Beasley said Thursday of the UD-DSU game, "and he was so elated it had become reality." As a junior in 1974, Beasley rushed for a school-record 1,374 yards for a Blue Hen team that reached the NCAA Division II championship game. He averaged 5.9 yards per carry. He piled up 1,077 yards as a senior.

Beasley's 2,697 career rushing yards still rank No. 5 all-time at UD. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders, but a neck injury precluded any chance at a pro career. Beasley often spoke of how Beasley known for gentle manner despite tough play By KEVIN TRESOLINI The News Journal Nate Beasley ran the football with power and unlikely finesse for a burly 6-foot-3, 212-pound fullback at the University of Delaware, where he was an All-American in 1974. When his college football days were done, he became known as a big man with a soft voice and kind disposition.

Friends and family members spoke in glowing terms of those traits Thursday after they were stunned and saddened to know that Beasley, 56, had died at his Wilmington home Wednesday. Beasley had long suffered from various cardiovascular ailments, including congestive heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, but seemed to be doing very well after Feb. 12 surgery, said his wife, Romaine. His heart may not have worked as efficiently as it needed to, but it never undermined his affection for others. "He was a gentle giant," said Frank Evans, a close friend since their UD days who had marveled at how healthy and energetic Beasley sounded when they spoke earlier this week.

"He was a big man to start with, and he had that football reputation of being able to knock the heck out of you. But he was a soft-spoken man who would do anything for anybody." Said Tubby Raymond, UD's football coach when Beasley played: "The kid was a remarkable gentleman and a fine football player. He was classy in every way and everybody loved him." Beasley retired on disability last year from his long-time job as program manager for Independent Resources, where he helped people who had been institutionalized become able to live independently. Beasley starred in football, basketball and baseball at Dover Air Force Base High School and first went to Delaware State, before Schwartzel 18th hole at Doral stings Els and Singh Associated Press DORAL, Fla. Five birdies were enough to put Charl Schwartzel among the leaders at the CA Championship.

He wound up alone at the top because he was the one player who managed to avoid a bogey. Schwartzel, who got into the elite field with his two victories in his native South Africa at the start of the season, played bogey-free in a vicious wind at the Blue Monster and pieced together a 5-under 67 for a one-shot lead Thursday. He might not have been in the lead by himself if not for so many mistakes on 18th at Doral, one of golf's most daunting closing holes. Ernie Els hit into the water with his approach on No. 18 and made bogey for a 4-under 68.

Vrjay Singh found the water off the tee and made double bogey, taking him from the lead to a 68. Larry McNair, who played with Beasley at Dover Air and then against him after McNair transferred to Dover High, shared the UD backfield with him until a knee injury cut his career short. But the two remained close friends. "Nate was a class act," McNair said. "I was surprised he didn't go pro. He hit the hole quick for a big man.

He had the Delaware Wing-T offense and the blocking schemes down to an art." Funeral arrangements are pending. Davies bailed herself out with some strong putting. "Luckily I putted really well today," Davies said. "Today we had two 8- or 9-footers for par and they both went right in the middle of the hole. That's the sort of thing that really keeps you going. Then on nine, hoping to two-putt and you roll a 35-footer in so that was a real bonus."
