THE ARIZONA DAILY STAR SECTION PAGE THREE TUCSON, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1971 OPEN SUNDAY DAILY TILL 8:30 Calvin Reynard Expect Record Golfs Big Three Eye Money Title HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) Pro golf's leading money winning title carries with it only some very considerable prestige, but the game's three dominant figures are taking a decided interest in it this year for one reason. "Who ever it is that wins it is going to set a record that will stand for a long, long time," Lee Trevino said yesterday. 3Q lllltj Truth Or Fiction? 3 BIG DAYS sun. Lindamood Net Meet To Start Trevino is locked in a battle with Jack Nlcklaus and Arnold Palmer going into the final weeks of the long, long season and a record already is assured.

Trevino, who swept the American, British and Canadian Open titles earlier this year, set a single season record of $227,243 a couple of weeks ago when he won the Sahara Invitations. That wiped out Nicklaus' old JUST ARRIVED SPECIAL FACTORY SHIPMENT In talking with many of the Southern Division football coaches, I've gotten the impression that they feel almost unanimously that the Class AA schools play a step below AAA ball. The one thing they almost always point to when comparing the leagues is the difference in the size of the schools. "They (AA schools) just don't have the personnel available that we do," goes the thinking. But not an AAA coach In the city will say that Salpointe, with just over 1000 students, will not be competitive.

But then the story goes that Salpointe's recruiting system is very effective. The state's other parochial schools. St. Mary's and Brophy have enrollments of 640 and 609. respectively.

Yet both continuously turn out winning football teams against their 1500-3 000 student opponents. And contrary to popular belief, none of the schools does much recruiting. The powerful AA teams are as equally competitive with AAA schools as many AAA schools are among themselves. True most will not fare well with their AAA competitors, but don't attribute that to the size of the school. Somewhere there is a breakdown in schools' programs.

I would give Flowing Wells a fighting chance against a Class AAA school and certainly a team like Safford can hold Its cwn. Both of course, have the best in coaching staffs and enough great players to make up for weaknesses. And that brings up another problem which, in selecting an All-City team last week, I was confronted with. The indication from one coach was that you just can't compare triple A and double A players. More than 250 youngsters begin play today in the four-day Fran Lindamood Memorial Junior Open Tennis Tournament.

Three sites Randolph Park, Catalina High School and Rincon High School will be used for the tourney, which is co-sponsored by Southern Arizona Tennis District and the Tucson Parks and Recreation Dept. The tournament, held over Thanksgiving for the past 12 years, as renamed this year in honor of Fran Lindamood, a long-time supporter of youth tennis. Srrva "The winner this year could go $240,000 to $250,000, maybe even higher," said Trevino, who was the leading money winner last season and currently leads by some $20,000 in the chase for the title that most pros feel marks the real tour champion of the year. "Jack could win this week and I'd have to finish lower than something like fourth or fifth for hiin to go by me," Trevino said.

Nicklaus, winner of his last three starts, now has $207,080. The 42-year-old Palmer, in one of his better seasons, has a chance at $196,206 but trails Trevino by some $33,000 with only three tournaments left All three are entered in the $110,000 Heritage Classic that starts today on the 6,655 yard, par 71 Harbour Town Golf Links, an oceanside layout that ranks among the best and most difficult in this country. First prize is $22,000 with Trevino, Nicklaus and Palmer sharing the favorite's role. Unfortunately an unbeaten Flowing Wells squad, which has probably the city's finest guard in Warner Bogle and some other top talent throughout its ranks, has received very little recognition, even though the Caballeros are seemingly headed for the state finals. Very few of the AA players are known outside their own schools and the schools they play. But a Kelly Langford is Southern Division, coaches will, after playing these teams next known throughout Southern Arizona. I didn't realize just how much wasn't known about AA football players until I started looking over last week's All-City nomination forms. Few AAA coaches even listed one AA player on their nomination forms, but most AA coaches recognized several of the top AAA players.

Now that Santa Ilita, Cholla and Buena are joining the Southern Division, coaches will after playing these teams next season, point to the results and gloat a little. But none of these teams are football powerhouses and in fact, all three have had to sruggle keep heir heads above aer. Drowning vs. Ai terra. II a.m.
